MidNight Gems - Undiscovered, Underrated & Forgotten Songs vol.64 "Best Dutch Songs in the World"
For those of you that are new to my MidNight Gems series. Welcome to this nightly trip on which we will uncover & recover some amazing songs & covers.
So I did a nice little job on the girly Dutch Invasion:
MidNight Gems - Undiscovered, Underrated & Forgotten Songs vol.61 "The Dutch Invasion"
And when I was busy writing that one .... it started me thinking about the Best Dutch songs ever. I will try and do a best songs ever when I hit #100 but damn with my musical taste....that´s gonna be close to impossible. But maybe if I limit myself to Dutch only I might just be able to list 9 amazing songs.
Tonight I will not save the best for last, if you really appreciate great music I guess this guy is the Dutch Leonard Cohen. This song brings back a lot of memories, my first sort of marriage ..... she never openly said she was having my last name. That´s what makes this song so special. As the sings about the night that they get married and she says that her last name is Boeijen. That is such an honor.
1. Frank Boeijen - Kamer Voor Twee (Februari '57)
Let´s put in another tearjerker especially with the Freaked up situation in the east of Europe right now? This song has given me goosebumps from the first time I heard it.
If you wanna understand the song even better, they did a great English version. Keep in mind that Claudia is not a singer, but a comedian.
2. Claudia de Breij - Mag ik dan bij jou (Can I be with you) [with English subtitles]
This next guy got canceled....if that was the right thing...I don´t care. It´s not about the person it´s about the music. And he made amazing tunes, better than this one....but this one is always taking me back to my son.... My son that soon will be turning 18, but in my mind still is 4 years old.
Love you Kyrian-Elijah these next two songs are yours.
3. Marco Borsato - Dochters (Daughters)
When I was 18, I finally left my parental house. I moved to the south of the Netherlands. The best move I made till then, even though I was not born there I am proud of Brabant and all the amazing friends I left there. And now I am 1800 miles away from the Peel and the Kempen but still if I ever have to go back....that´s where I´ll go. And I am proud that my son is born there and forever will be a true Brabander.
4.Guus Meeuwis - Brabant
This is not the translation but this is a great mashup so I could have taken any song form this guy. He´s the messiah of Dutch music and I was brought up listening to his music....when my parents had a bit too much to drink. But this is a typical song that did not fit the place where I gave my last real gig....this has nothing today with rock, metal, indy, alternative music. But it speaks about how I would be going...but be back one day...bigger and better. And I came back, bitter and better.
5. André Hazes - Zeg Maar Niets Meer
Sara Smiles....thi song is so gloomy and so amazingly well done, it´s about the fact that they got a child with a disability. And how they rather had an 'other' kid. How the fam. did not stay long for that first visit, and who will love her when her parents are no longer there. But her smile, Sara´s smile is so beautiful and honest-
6. Sara Lacht - Circus Custers
So to keep making comparisons this next guy is the Dutch Bob Dylan and I could have taken any of his songs. But this one always made a huge impression, it´s absolutely not a famous song but...she sings about her zipper was undone and he didn´t give a damn... that part will always stay with me.
7. Boudewijn de Groot - Travestie
Alright let´s pump up the volume with Floor covering a ....well the best Stef Bos song propbably. This is what Nightwish would sound like if Floor would sing in her mother tongue. Goshh I would love a whole album like this Floor!
8. Floor Jansen - Is Dit Nou Later ( Lyrics ) cover stef bos
To come full circle I would have to end with that Stef bos guy and Frank Boeijen (the guy that started this trip).
This song is a reminder, this is for my brother who departed last year. It´s about two guys at the burial of a friend....he´s both the other guy and the one being buried.

Now, these might not be the best songs in the world, but this is probably the most personal playlist I have created so far.
And I promise I will not create any Dutch playlist again....or at least until I have written more than 100 Midnight Gems sessions, so you guys and dolls are save....for now.

What the fluff are midnight gems?
Somewhere lost in time, trying to escape out of the rabbit hole back into the rat race there is a vacuum..... that´s the place where midnight gems are found.
My Midnight Gems will try to uncover & recover those beautiful songs that nobody ever noticed or might have been forgotten.
Who the fluff am I?
Being a former DJ playing about everything and having an uncompleted study of radio journalism. I have been wanting to do this for years....Thought about it many nights and guess now it´s time to finally take it to the streets.
