MidNight Gems - Undiscovered, Underrated & Forgotten Songs vol.61 "The Dutch Invasion"
For those of you that are new to my MidNight Gems series. Welcome to this nightly trip on which we will uncover & recover some amazing songs & covers.
Yes maybe the choice of words for tonight´s title was not so subtle, but it is an honest title because as a tribute to my native country I need to admit that the Dutch music scene has grown a lot over the years.
There is a whole new army of Dutch girls making amazing songs, songs that except for the language that sounds like a throat decease are very fitting for a Midnight Gems Session.
Kicking it off is S10 (Estien) who will be representing the Dutch during the Eurovision festival, with a song that like Duncan Lawerence´s song doesn´t really sound Eurohorrible.... it´s actually very deep and catchy while still somewhat alternative.
1. S10 - De Diepte - Netherlands 🇳🇱 Eurovision 2022
The leading lady of this new musical female front is Eefje, she´s been around the block and really started a whole new sound (at least for the Dutch market) that often feels like a dutch version of London Grammar.
Talking about Grammer you can read the English translation in the small print, it might help....
2. Eefje de Visser - De Parade
Happy New Year, The world is on fire, but the fire is bigger than ik (I). This is just a sick lyrical masterpiece with average beats, which underlines the story even more. And damn she´s right because this fire is much bigger than you and me and we are closing our eyes daily.
3. Froukje - Groter Dan Ik (Lyrics)
She has such an innocent look in her eyes and makes something that is just a bit too poppy for my taste, still, this one is definitely worth a listen and I needed a bridge to the Meau song.
4. Bente - Kom Dan
Here we go again, part 2 of your Dutch lesson. This girl and this song came seemingly out of nowhere and probably scored the biggest Dutch #1 song of 2022. Keeping it small allowed Meau to make it big...big and very personal as you can read.
5. MEAU - Dat heb jij gedaan (English translation)
Okay let´s get a bit less serious....another girl on the Dutch frontline is Merol....the girl became famous with a song that was called: Hou je bek and bef me.....which means as much as....well just watch the video if you are over 18 there is a translation there. And if the video is age restricted I will add a free for all as well.
6. MEROL - Hou je bek and bef me / Dan Maar Jij
She might not be the best, but she definitely is the biggest youngster star on the Dutch block and this song really was huge and I can only agree that it was deserved. Again I was able to find a video with a translation, and these lyrics might do deserve that.
7. Ze huilt maar ze lacht Lyrics (EngSub) _MaaN
Well let´s also add a true gem, Meis is really a new discovery but damn this song is sick, simply superb in its build-up. Combining many of the features we touched on already during this journey and this one only has 800 views and that is the most viewed version of the song....I love this tripping song.
8. Meis - Zee
Okay, let´s do a colab from two of these woman warriors and see how they take out the audience during a real live performance. And of course, giving you a final lesson in the great language called Dutch.

What the fluff are midnight gems?
Somewhere lost in time, trying to escape out of the rabbit hole back into the rat race there is a vacuum..... that´s the place where midnight gems are found.
My Midnight Gems will try to uncover & recover those beautiful songs that nobody ever noticed or might have been forgotten.
Who the fluff am I?
Being a former DJ playing about everything and having an uncompleted study of radio journalism. I have been wanting to do this for years....Thought about it many nights and guess now it´s time to finally take it to the streets.
