Everyone calls her June. I call her Mum. She's 87 in age but she's only 18 at heart. She's the sweetest, generous and kind but my mum is no mug! She got so many stories that I love to hear even she already told me it twice or thrice. If only for her legs that she complaining every day, she could be the healthiest 87 years old here in Comber. That's what her doctor always says.
My Mum when she's young loves to run. She always wins in school and every race she's in. But her granny doesn't like her running. And they were not allowed to accept money from anyone. One time she receives a big penny for winning a race which she didn't tell her granny. She's so excited to show her but she wasn't happy and throw the penny away. And after that every time someone gives her and her other sibling's money no matter how big or small it is, she said they always throw it into the river. She showed me that river once. And that kids should only be seen not heard during that time.
Her Mum and Dad were in the Royal Army and her granny was a cook at the royal family. She said her Mum never likes her for she always dresses like a man. She never like a dress, don't like any makeup and love trousers just. She played the accordion in the band. And she got a lovely voice even I only hear her sing once.
She met dad when she's 19 at the dance. Since then they were never apart. Her Mum and Dad thought she's pregnant when she said she wanted to get married to dad. They start their life humbly. They really work so hard.
Mum worked until she's 65. She said her first job was at the office, doing paper works but it's not what she likes. She wasn't born for that she said. She wants a man's job. Because before, man's job is worth more. And she likes the machine. She wants some action. And so she works in a mill operating a big machine that she really enjoys.
Let me show this.
They have 3 sons. She said they always wanted a girl but didn't bless with one. Maybe that's why they love Tia so much. The eldest hates the school when he's young. The second, no fear always pain in the arse. She said she's the happiest woman in the world when he left the house to get married. And the youngest my husband who she wanted to be a girl but didn't come out as she wished.
Mum loves to tell stories and here's some of what I learned from what she had told me:
Work
"Work while you're still young and don't stop until you can, so when you get old you can enjoy the fruit of your own labour."
She paid a man's stamp (big stamps) so that she can get a bigger pension and insurance when she reaches the pension age of 60. And she worked till she's 65. They get a cottage house .6 hectares in 1969, Dad won the bidding for our house that used to be called Rose Cottage. It's almost 2000£ payable for 10 years or more. Mum put £400 as downpayment and paying £74.74 quarterly. You know how much their salary before? Dad working in a shipyard and making £5 a week and Mum in the mill for £3.50 a week. Can you imagine how to make ends meet that time? And when Dad was only 45 and took a stroke and it's only been 2 years since they got the house, Mum has to work night and day juggling work home and raising pigs to make ends meet. She paid the house in just 8 years. Until now, she never just sits in the house. She keeps doing things she can to keep her going.
Marriage
"You've made your bed, you must lie in it."
She said she wonders why the relationship doesn't last in this generation. In the news, always talking about break up and divorce. You get married today and go out with somebody else tomorrow. Mum said everyone will say, "You're the big whore around." And if ever it happens before her time you cannot just go back to your parent's house. They will send you back to your husband. You suffer the consequences of what you do. She said "I and your dad never fell out with each other. " Maybe because we don't have time to fight because we are both busy working. You don't have time to fight before. And he always gave me his money. And I only giving him allowance for a week. But he still gets what he wants. I budget everything. I keep the house right. I pay the bills in advance and always have food in the fridge. I managed this house right from the start until now.
Money and Spending
You live in what you have. Don't get into debt! You save!
It all started when she's working in the mill and there's a lady selling different stuff and you pay her on payday. Everyone is taking something from her except Mum. Because her granny told her, "June don't you take off anything from anyone otherwise you wouldn't have a penny left before you get your pay." Don't take, save your money. From then on, if Mum wants something and she doesn't have money for it, she saves little by little and gets it.
Food/Eating
Always eat breakfast in the morning. When you get old you'll get bad. You'll not live long because that's not how to live.
She will get mad if we don't take our breakfast. She said that's the most important one to take.
Sleeping
You will never see me getting up and lie in bed. If I get up I never go back to bed unless it's my time to sleep.
People are getting lazy. Kicking off their shoes lying in the sofa. There's no work for them now. My mum gets up half seven every day and goes to bed at half eleven. She said there's time for sleeping and it's at night.
Raising Children
Learn them to do things. There's no harm at teaching them at a very young age.
Mum loves children all her life. She always told me to learn my children to do things. She said when she was young about 4 or 5 her granny will let her stood on the chair to wash the dishes. She was taught to clean the windows. She watches her while she bakes and she has her own dough and rolling pin. She told me that I have to do it so when they get old I have no bother. "Everyone in my child can cook." There's no harm in teaching them. She used to tell her children, "You dirty your plate, you wash it, dry it and put it where you get it."
So now, we're doing the same to the kids. Clean your own toys, wash your dishes and help cleaning the house. No dirty cup left behind.
And one last thing, my mum said,
"Don't let anyone make a mug of you!"
She's my mother in law. She's my Mum. She's amazing. And I love her so much.
Isn't she awesome? I hope you did get some lesson from her!
THANK YOU!
