Hello Travel Lovers!
Our destination: Vigan, Philippines featuring Calle Crisologo
Let's go back in time and discover Philippines old streets and Spanish houses dated way back 16th centuries when the Philippines was colonized by Spain.
Vigan City is located at the western coast of Luzon and the capital city of Ilocos Sur. It is roughly 8-10 hours drive from Manila depending on traffic This city is well preserved and recognized as a UNESCO World Heritage Site in the Philippines.
The most popular tourist destination in Vigan is the Calle Crisologo.
This looks like an old Spanish town. The streets and the footpath are made of cobblestones. The old structure of this place remained intact. The architecture is so unique that you you cannot see it elsewhere.
Calle Crisologo Street is full of restaurants, souvenir shops, antique shops and more. Try their famous local foods like longganisa, bagnet, pinakbet and empanadas.
Check this extraordinary restaurant called "Kusina Felicitas" Authentic and Modern Ilocano Cuisine. They offer a wide range of choices from local to Asian foods. It's like a small museum inside. It is full of interesting decorations and historical things and beautiful paintings. The brick walls and the intricate design will take you back to the Spanish era which gives you that nostalgic feeling.
Here are some of the cool things you will see inside the restaurant:
This place is special. A restaurant and museum just in one place. It's simply astonishing to eat and stun on what's around you. The vibe this place giving is so surreal that I'm lost for words.
You can also ride a "Kalesa" or horse-drawn carriage to tour you around Calle Crisologo and the rest of the heritage site to make it extra special. Rate starts from Php500 and it takes 1-2 hours of roaming around. There are also pedicab and tricycle plying around the street.
Calle Crisologo is also a place where you want to buy souvenir items or gifts. From fridge magnet, keychains, handmade bags and t-shirt with Vigan logo. The price is negotiable and to be fair, it wasn't dear (reasonable). They even give you freebies if you buy more items.
The Beautiful Tale of Calle Crisologo
There are many tales why Calle Crisologo still standing right this very moment when most of the towns in the country have been destroyed during the war.
The most famous tale that saved Vigan from destruction is a beautiful love story. It's the story of a Japanese General who fell in love with a Filipina in Vigan. They got married and raised a family.
The war has begun and the general was worried for the safety of his family. He defied orders from his superiors to destroy Vigan and protected his family.
What a beautiful love story. I hope they live happily ever after!
