Instead of dwelling to use my brain after college, why not use it while pursuing a degree?"* From Sunday (04/16/23) to Monday (04/24/23), I'd been too busy upon accepting tutorial sessions and academic commissions from my fellow college students. Additionally, practice on the thesis conduct made my daily schedule intensely hectic: Today, I leave the house around 6:50AM in order to begin the laboratory tasks more earlier. **And, here's what I did at the laboratory from 8:00AM to 1:10PM:** *Isolation of seeds to acquire seed-borne fungal pathogens (Attempt 2); and* *Re-isolation of pathogens for spore suspension.* PS. "Pumasok nang mas maaga para maka-uwi kaagad at hindi na naman gabihin sa laboratory." As I finished all the pending papers for the academic commissioning yesterday, I am only waiting for the payment to be received until this afternoon. Hence, I deserve some simple treats. Right? Right! *To boost up all of the consumed energy and braincells upon doing the paperworks, my inner body screams for SWEETS.* ***Here's the sweets I got for myself:*** β β‘ **CAKE IN A STICK** The newly appointed Entomologist at the laboratory gave this to us who are scheduled to run microscopical tests. I ain't a fan of milk-flavored cake coats but this one hits differently. The sweetness isn't too much to bear, so I'll give it a rate of 12/10. β β‘ **MANGO GRAHAM SHAKE** As I got home from attending to my important errands, I immediately visited the local shop where I usually buy iced shakes. And, mango graham shake is my favorite among their offered flavors: *Sipping at this cup always eased my existing level of stress and boost up my energy to attend at the next tasks. So, come and sip at your comfort cups!* Furthermore, thank you to our thesis advisor for today's free lunch and snacks. THESIS 101 | "An Expensive Journey In College!" ARTICLE NO. 03 OF 2033 | APRIL 09, 2023 *The toughest and most laborious aspect in college had already begun in 2020. Thus, visioning how and when would this possibly be successfully accomplished isn't assured yet.* ***As a student pursuing Bachelor of Science in Agriculture, THESIS is one of the two major requirements to graduate along with Major Practice (MP). Apparently, MP wasn't catered in my major and specialization [Crop Protection - Plant Pathology].*** By the second semester of Academic Year 2020-2021 (Second Year), I started drafting out my first thesis study about "*mapping of the most devastating complex fungal disease in onion.*" However, by January 2023, I was instructed to do another study which is more better and has a greater impact to the agriculture sector. Before proceeding to the thesis outline presentation by May [initial target], I was tasked to do trials regarding to the methods. This way, the probability of encountering errors during the actual conduct would be lessened. Additionally, to be able to construct answers to the possible question to be asked by the panelists. *****As part of the preparation for the said trial, I purchased more stuffs to be used for the scheduled laboratory tasks by Tuesday such as:***** *Seed preparation for culturing; and* *Isolation of seeds of five (5) newly developed rice lines and varieties in Potato Dextrose Agar (PDA) media.* Supposedly, these tasks should be done by last week (Wednesday). Apparently, it was cancelled and rescheduled due to the suspension of classes. Also, I remembered that I still need to buy more personal-owned-stuffs to be used at the laboratory. *In this blog, allow me to share what I had purchased today. Hence, how expensive it is to pursue an experimental study as compared to survey studies of non-science-related courses.* ****Small basins - PHP 125.00 ($2.29)**** In the laboratory, we have a lot of stuffs and equipments to be accessed for free. However, those that aren't available, we are responsible to purchase it on our own including the basins. *These basins will be used when I'll perform the "seed preparation" by Tuesday. I bought five pieces for* ***PHP 25.00 ($0.46)*** *each at the department store. Each basin will be used per rice variety.* ****Utility basket - PHP 89.00 ($1.63)**** Upon performing laboratory tasks, wiping the washed stuffs with dry cloth is strictly prohibited. Instead, all of it should be dried in the natural way. Therefore, "utility baskets" is a great help. *Since I was looking for the basket with the cheapest price, I got to visit two department stores at the city. At Super99, I was able to find this big one for only* ***PHP 89.00****.* ****Record book - PHP 55.00 ($1.01)**** *In the field of science, "record book" is also classified as our '****personal diary****.' So, I search one with good quality papers and here it is. Got my personal stuff for* ***55 pesos ($1.01)****.* ****Syringes (1 cc and 5 cc) - PHP 55.00 ($1.01)**** Of course, syringes shouldn't be forgotten. Guess what? Whenever I am holding and using this stuff? I feel like I'm a human doctor and is readying to perform a surgery. *giggles* *I bought five pieces of syringe at 1 cc for PHP 5.00 ($0.092) each and three pieces of 5 cc which costs me 10.00 pesos ($0.18) per piece. In total, these eight (8) syringes costs* ***PHP 55.00 ($1.01)****.* ****Sodium hypochlorite solution - PHP 52.00 ($0.95)**** Before proceeding to isolation, seeds should be properly disinfected and sterilized first whereby we will use "**sodium hypochlorite solution**." It is not available in the market. Therefore, I opted to purchase online via Shopee. Ordered a bottle with 120 mL for ***PHP 38.00 ($0.70)***. Since I am after the "cheaper price", I used my vouchers to lessen the original fee: *From PHP 98.00 ($1.80) down to* ***PHP 52.00 ($0.95),*** *real quick.* Overall, all of these stuffs costs me to spend **PHP 376.00 ($6.90)** in just a single day. Such a pain in the pocket! On the brighter aspect, I was able to purchase my own stuffs and had reduced the time to be spent upon borrowing nor waiting for other students to finish their accessibility: *More items to be purchased, self! To meditate and reflect while continuous attending to other academic and non-academic responsibilities, thus, to make a living."* In the Philippines, we are used to celebrate **Holy Week**, also widely known as 'Semana Santa' or 'Mahal na Araw.' It is a highly significant religious event featuring Jesus Christ's life, passion, death and resurrection. **Specifically, it covers seven days covering these following timeline:** Palm Sunday (*Linggo ng Palaspas*); Holy Monday to Wednesday; Maundy Thursday (*Huwebes Santo*); Good Friday (*Biyernes Santo*); Holy Saturday; and Easter Sunday (*Linggo ng Pagkabuhay*). Truthfully, our family doesn't regularly visit the church to attend masses. We do admit it! However, we still actively get in touch with Him in other means such as regularly praying to send our gratitude and ask for forgiveness, guidance and protection. Also, participating in important religious events like this. *In this blog, allow me to discuss what plans and schedule during the Holy Week break (Wednesday to Sunday).* ****>> WEDNESDAY: AT THE LABORATORY**** As a part of an agricultural research project at the university, I am tasked to fasten up the workflow of my thesis. Upon the compliance, I will go to the laboratory tomorrow to do two (2) steps as part of the practice before the department defense and actual conduct of the study. **These includes:** *Seed preparation for culturing; and* *Isolation of seeds of five (5) newly developed rice lines and varieties in Potato Dextrose Agar (PDA) media.* >> **THURSDAY: TUTORIAL SESSION** At the morning, I will be having an scheduled tutorial with my Grade 3 tutee. First Blog In 2023 | "Inactivity Feats. Thesis & Sideline Jobs!" ARTICLE NO. 01 OF 2023 (April 01, 2023) *Year 2022 comes to an end and here's 2023, waiting for a major season of blossoming. Goals awaits to be fulfilled, challenges to overcome without getting severely wrecked.* *On the first three months, problems flocked on the nests of our respective lives. Hence, nothing can defeat a determined soul. So, here we are! Still pursuing what we want to be achieved, someday.* As face-to-face classes resumes by September 2022, busyness begins to get more intensified resulting for an intolerable inactivity in blogging and crypto-verse. **Take a look at the durability of my inactivity in online blogging:** *More than 3 months in read.cash;* *One month in Hive (PeakD); and* *22-days in noise.app!* In this blog, let me share what had made me occupied on the past few months as a struggling-extended-college-student: **AS A SEMI FULL-TIME COLLEGE STUDENT** *Of course, attaining a college diploma for my Bachelor's degree is my ultimate goal in 20s. Three Academic Years are all well-spent, thus, achieving high sets of grades in every semesters were unlocked. However, the journey became more difficult as I stepped up to college. The biggest game changer of the journey!* *THESIS CONSULTATIONS & MOCK DEFENSE* Thought that I have 80% of graduating on-time as I presented my first thesis study about "**mapping of fungal diseases in onion.**" Apparently, I was obligated to change my study for some serious reasons. By now, my study is regarding to "***nanotechnology + seed priming + seed-borne fungal pathogens + Special Purpose Rice.***" Can't reveal the title for privacy. *Here's when we attended a consultation by 1:00PM to 8:30 in the evening:* The changes was incurred by February and on the previous weeks, series of uncountable consultations were done. Been going to different offices such as Nano Faculty and PhilSCAT to consult to other specialists and all of it are brain-wrecking and stressful. More over, mock defense were adhered. *****More consultations, mock defense & meetings awaits on the next days. Bare with it, self!***** *LABORATORY TASKS (DIAGNOSIS, ETC.)* Since I'll be doing an experimental research involved in an agricultural project in the university, I am training myself first before conducting the experiment proper so I could properly address the panelists' questions on the day of presentation *Morphological identification & diagnosis of water-borne fungi from isolates:* *What I diagnosed for over 3-hours:* *Preparation of Potato Dextrose Agar:* The PDA will be used for my isolates of seed-borne fungal pathogens. It's easy, yes! But, can you guess the temperature of the flask I'm holding? It is around 55Β°C. It's so hot to hold with bare hands. Still, I survived and aiming for next time! **SIDE HUSTLES / SIDELINE JOBS** *College journey isn't all about achieving what we've been dreaming to have. Financial struggles are always present to make the path more rougher & tougher. Hence, to be resourceful ("madiskarte") is a big MUST to survive 4-6 years in college.* **Here are the side hustles that I committed to surpass financial burdens:** *BLOGGING AT HIVE (PEAKD)* Hive Blockchain is another blogging platform. Had joined in July 2022 but activeness weren't consistently uptaken. Been earning good amount, yet a month of inactivity isn't enough to sustain my financial needs: *Hopefully, I could also gain back my activeness here. Slowly but surely!* *THRIFT BUSINESS* Around February 2023, I and @carisdaneym2 established a thrift business (partnership). We've been earning good amount but we both became busy with thesis and OJT, respectively. The results? No sales for over 2-weeks. *Comeback for our business were being planned. Aiming for more sold items and yes, sales too!* *ACADEMIC COMMISSIONING* Because my scholarship allowance isn't yet disbursed and my BCH hodlings were slowly getting drained, I think of another outlet to possibly earn money. And here it is, by accepting commissions from my fellow college students. *On the first five (5) days from five clients, I already earned PHP 1150.00 ($21.18):* *By now, I'm about to acquire PHP 4000.00+ ($73.68). Half were sent, another half were saved for future expenses.* *TUTORIAL SESSIONS* Every weekends, I have an scheduled 3-hours of tutorial sessions. Overall, that's PHP 600.00 ($11.05) for only working at 6-hours. *If I could just accept more tutees, I will be glad to do so. But, my tight schedule forbids me to.* *LAUNDRY STAFF: ON-CALL* At the laundry shop where Mama works, they're looking for an on-call staff. So, I grabbed the opportunity and applied! Luckily, I got hired and today is my 5th day of working. *Though, the salary was beyond the minimum wage but it's fine. At least, I got an additional source of money to finance my studies and other needs.* CLOSING THOUGHTS *"Jiving academics, family responsibilities and sideline jobs isn't easy. And, will never be! However, I am at peace while attaining growth and progress despite of the tiredness & hectic schedule. All of it are part of the process and I will wholeheartedly commit to it! I secretly wiped my tears for uncountable times, *kunyari napuwing or inaantok.* Around 6:10AM, the mass had ended. **Talking to Him is really the greatest way to cope up with all the negativities**, that's a fact regardless of our different religions. After the mass, there is a free lugaw (rice porridge) to be given to the attendees. This is under the church's initiation known as "**HAPAG - Blessed Ka Na, Busog Ka Pa!**" For the past 4-years, it's already a tradition in our community. *And, look! I and Tita were caught in the camera while getting our cups of lugaw. Shocking!* In here, let me share the list of my "**SIMBANG GABI 2022 GOALS**." ββ Complete the novena - FAILED. Aside from repenting, this is my ultimate goal which is to complete the 9-days of Misa de Gallo. Last 2021, I failed to achieve it because Lola, my greatest companion, isn't here anymore. Also, I got busy when we moved in into this boarding house. And again, I failed this 2022 as I didn't attend on the Day 2. Blame it to myself as I forgotten to set an alarm at 4:00AM which made me to wake up around 7:00AM. ββ Give donations [grocery, etcetera] - ONGOING. For the past 3-years, I am giving a grocery pack to the chapel as a part of their "good deeds." The packs they will collect from those who will donate will be given to the poor families of our community. **Last 2021, I failed this as most of my money was allocated for the house rent and such.** **This year, I aim to donate these:** *Grocery pack for the poor families; and* *Candies and chocolates for the kids.* I want to greatly commit in this goal for LOLA. Too long to be remembered. When face-to-face was permitted to resume in tertiary level, what worries me the most is: " ... how can I afford to send myself to school considering the other expenses?" **My leading solution?** It is *to triple up what I am doing in blogging*. It's not purely about wearing that "****much awaited black toga & cap with yellow tassel****".* More so, ***to aim for bigger achievements like ...*** " ... to take and passed the Licensure Examination for Agriculturists." π€ In order to proclaim ourselves as a Registered Agriculturists and have that "**L. Agr.**" after our names? **We must ace the board examination**, *regardless of how many take/s it will be.* ***Here's a fast trivia about the board exam for Agriculturists:*** " ... **Agriculturist Licensure Examination** (ALE) or **Licensure Examination for Agriculturists** (LEA) were taken ***every November for 3-days***. In 2019, it ranked as the **third** most difficult board examination in the Philippines." This year, ALE happens in **November 22-24** in different testing centers in the Philippines. *Here in Luzon, only a few Testing Centers offers ALE such as:* "NCR (Manila), Baguio, Pampanga and Tuguegarao." *And, finally! The much awaited day of ALE takers has arrived. After almost 2-weeks, the results are all out.* Every takers surely utters & keeps on muttering a prayer before opening the file and while scrolling on the list. **Their prayer?** *None other than* ***to see their names in the list.*** According to Professional Regulation Commission (PRC), **4035** out of **more than eleven thousand takers** had passed the board exam. **Me to those who are adding "******lang******" to Agriculture students and graduates:** *"Does the number of passers enough to prove that studying BS Agriculture isn't like what you think off?"* Additionally, there are a total of **29 Topnotchers** in ALE 2022 whereas the two **Top 1** are from ***University of the Philippines -Los BaΓ±os*** and ***Visayas State University***. Like the previous years, *UP-LB* still holds the title as a "****Top Performing School****" for having such a high numbers of passers. This year, 100.00% of their takers had passed the Licensure Examination. And, there's more. The **Top 2 and Top 9 are from our university**. Yey! Last ALE 2019, the one and only Top 1 is from CLSU. Such a huge achievement it is! Overall, **67.87%** of the total numbers of takers from our university had passed the ALE 2022. Wherein 71.19% are first takers and 54.55% are repeaters (i.e. second take). No! It's not & will never be.
