Fix That Attitude.
This is not a break from the series and I feel a bit disappointed which is why I had to write this. You can take this as part 3 of the series on Life Is About Helping but this time around, I am focusing on another aspect of this help.
You can read about the other part of the series below:
Some need our help and some might never get help from others unless they fix their attitude. Attitude is everything but most people focus on getting help rather than helping themselves first by fixing their attitude. It's shameful when you can't even help yourself and you expect others to help you first. If you have ever given a proposal to anyone soliciting funds, the first thing they would ask you is, how much funds have you gotten? They would ask you that to be sure you are willing to invest your own money first before asking for help. If you can't help yourself at least, it would be hard for others to help you.
What birthed this, you might ask? This morning, we had free clothing distribution to do just around my Church area. I was excited because I always want to be a part of anything that involves helping people. It delights me to see others happy and that's why I would always give myself to it. We set out early this morning and it was the barracks we went to. We targetted the Police Barracks so we can reach out to their wives and children.
Most of them complain about poor pay and unhealthy standard of living so we thought helping them with clothing items would ease things up for them. They were more than 200 in number and we wanted them to pick 4 clothing items each. We were not ready for what was about to come next. It was shocking to me, to say the least.
We already took our time to arrange the clothes so they would be easy to identify. The ones for women, the ones for children, the native attires and even the ones for men and the shoes were put separately. We even rented chairs for them to sit down so they won't bother hanging around. We spoke with them for a while and after that, we explained to them how the distribution would go. At least 5 people at once would go round, pick 4 clothing items and like that, till we would exhaust the numbers.
The moment we asked 5 to come out for their pick, every one of them stood up, rushed the tables, and carted away with whatever their hands were able to fill and grab. I stood aloof in shock disbelief because I can't believe some people could act so barbaric out of greed and with disorderliness. I saw a woman grab most of the babies' clothes as they filled her whole grip and most people did the same too.
The problem we have in this world isn't just because of lack or poverty mentality but it's due to selfishness and greed. We always want to have everything without considering others. Even when we have an abundance of things and there is no scarcity in the world, with humans' greed and selfishness, we would create artificial scarcity for ourselves.
We seem to be quick to point accusing fingers at our leaders yet we absolve ourselves of the little evils we do in our corner. We seem to always find fault with the so-called leaders forgetting that they started just as we have seen today in the distribution center. The worst part is that, when we also attain that leadership position, we would do worse than them if we are already acting this way for now. Most people don't need help until they help themselves.
Imagine someone who suffers from gluttony or wastes money. No matter the amount of food or money you give to such a person, that person would always be in need or want because the major problem hasn't been addressed and we are just fueling that person's weakness. It's shameful but we all need to do better and it starts with fixing our attitudes.
I was so disappointed and angry that I said I would never visit that same place again to gift them anything. Some people were genuinely in need, yet, due to the greed of some others, they were denied. There were people with babies who wouldn't even dare rush the table, they just stood there, helpless and my heart aches for them because they have been robbed of what was meant to go round. It's disheartening, to say the least.
When we don't change our attitude, no matter how much abundance of things we were given, it can never be enough because greed is powerful and if not tamed, it would consume anyone and affect those around that person. Imagine, someone picking just the right leg of a shoe while another picked the left one. How would they see each other to trade? How will that single pair benefit them? There are some that I am sure would to and sell those clothing items because they picked what they don't even need. That's one thing with greed, it messes you up and you end up taking what you don't even need.
I wouldn't say I regret going there today but I would say it opened my eyes to the root of the problem the world is facing. Indeed, if we care enough and share enough, the world would have enough because this world already have enough of what we need but it's just that it's not designed to satisfy human greed. Our problem in this world is greed and selfishness and if we don't address it, NOTHING would change.

Very astute observations Olasquare, it is extremely unfortunate that there are many people that are animalistic in that regard, but I would disagree about the statement that "most" are greedy; I think that the majority are good decent people running around, for the most part they are more low key and don't do stupid stuff that causes them to stand out.
