Hello dear friends! What have you guys been up to? How's Thursday?
Have you ever found yourself looking back into your past and then thinking of how you got this far?
When I think about it, a lot of what I have enjoyed so far in the last three years have been partly because of people I met along the way. My opportunities opened up because of simple "Hi".
No, I did not use that line. Haha I used something else but could translate to a "Hi" anyway. Yes something similar, dropped and used with timing.
An opportune time
There was an event one time in the snack floor of our office. The event occupied half of the place. Me and my team mates were snacking on siomai, siopao, coffee and sandwiches. The guy taking the picture of the event sometimes holds a spot near our area. The guy is an acquaintance from another team. We work on the same floor and his team seats right behind my area. So we do get to talk every once in a while.
When he stood near our spot I tapped him on his shoulders. I calculated the odds of getting a negative response of course and have already prepared my dear self if ever I get rejected. Besides, what I was going to ask him was a little too brave and bold for an acquaintance.
Weaved by Interest/s and wanting to get mentored
I peered over his shoulder and looked at the display on his camera. I commended his shots because they were nice shots. Then I kidded him if I can try. To my surprise he did allow me to use his camera. I took a few shots and examined my shots which are very far from his shots. Then my other teammates with me that time also had a try and the three of us started talking about creating a club. Turns out we have common interests. It was a perfect start for getting mentored.
I know a few other people from my previous team who we can pull in to join and we were glad they did.
That was the start of my extracurricular involvement in the company. Prior to my transfer to my current department my only involvement in company events that I will not have any conflict with my work will be the sportsfest event where our heads do expect us to participate in and really aim for a win.
Speaking of "win" ... see these beautiful below in the boxes? Go visit their works!
All their crafts are a win, too! Go 'head and be inspired with their words.
This time, since that friend was somehow connected to the employee engagement, we were tapped to cover any event - from leadership summit to corporate shoot to cleanups, tree-planting movements and townhalls plus be involved in the sportsfest as well.
I love the excuse. Staying with the company for a real long time, I grew tired of sitting out the events waiting for the signal that we can start eating. hehe. I wanted to be able to move around and be near the stage where the performers are and not worry too much about blocking anyone's view.
One of our teammates there also have side gigs. He hooked us up one time to his gig just so we can get the feel of it. It was a no pressure exposure but an experience nonetheless.
It was a dance recital. Our teammate has been their usual man for their recital and studio shoots. He invited us again last year not for a recital but for a shoot. It would have been a good follow up exposure since I really am not comfortable with portraits yet. But I needed to turn it down because of the pandemic and all. I will be coming home to two seniors and would also be limited to see my siblings and their cute, sweet kids.
And in that same group, I also met the person who introduced me to noise. Hmm.. Talk about meeting angels along the way, eh?
Closing Thoughts..
Not much. Just this: Meet angels or be the angel? We will meet people along the way. And mostly now that we are mostly online we expand the field. Care to be the fiber-optic-winged angel to some? Make the next kid happy, 'eh?
