She is having a bad day. That is for sure. She has not walked out of the door yet, but she knows she is already having a bad day. That is because she woke up late. In the place she lives in, you have to be leaving the house by 6:30AM and on the bus before 7AM. Because if you are not rolling out of that bus loading area before 7am, your travel will dramatically change from a 30-minute ride travel time to an hour and a half. 6:59AM is forgivable. But for some reason by 7AM, the place magically turns into chaos. No word for it. For some reason, the vehicles cruising the highway comes to a full stop. It becomes a non-moving traffic. And she is late. She went out the door, time check, at 7AM.
She had thought of calling in sick but then again she ran out of sick leave reasons - from head to toe. All the aches she can think of - Headache, ear ache, eye ache, tooth ache, stiffed neck, shoulder pain, back pain, tummy ache up to the toe ache for when she stubbed her toe on something. She proceeded to her usual commute. Hail a tricycle that will take her to the main road hoping that the traffic jam in the main road has not yet reached their street. Then, crossing her fingers, she would chance upon a non-sardine-packed bus. Thankfully, the trike ride was smooth. There was a slight traffic on the U-turn slot that the trike needs to take so she can get off but overall, it was fine.
Miraculously as well, the moment she got off the tricycle she was able to spot a van without passengers turning the U turn slot and going the same direction she needs to go. She hailed it, and it stopped in front of her. Like magnet, a lot of people came over to try to get in to the same vehicle. It was a good thing she got in front - a good spot for proper ventilation and less likely to be cramped. She closed the door. She took a deep breath. Checked her watch and shook her head. She really is not going to make it. She pulled out her earphones and started to listen to music from her phone instead just to give her entertainment while the van, now full, starts to move but, they were already at the tail end of the heavy traffic. It is going to be a long commute.
Accepting her fate and throwing whatever may happen when she gets to the office to the universe, she settled in checking out the faces of the people in the van- those that she can see through the rear view mirror. She already saw some sleeping, others texting on the phone and one who has earphones on biting on his thumb looking outside the window in rather deep thought. Just by looking at his profile, and it could be his prominent nose, she cannot take her eyes away from him.
Then suddenly the classic thing happened. The guy turned around and looked at the rearview mirror as well locking eyes with her. She froze. He is expressionless. And she sees that this guy really is as she suspected good-looking! She would have looked away. But something about the guy made her stare back. Now this beats traffic boredom, she thinks. They were in eye to eye contact for a real long time.
Unfortunately, the sleeping girl beside the guy suddenly wrapped her arms around his right arm. Oh shoot. She thinks and looks away. After a while she finally got off her stop.
While rushing in towards her building, she looked inside her shoulder bag to get her badge out. She showed it to the guard and she ran to the closing elevator. The elevator was almost full but the fact that the elevator went up anyway, means it is not over its capacity. She got in fine and when stood up straight and faced the door, the reflection on the elevator was no other than the same guy she was having a staring game with in the van now looking at her through the reflection on the closed elevator door wearing a reserved but cute smile.
She felt all the blood rush to her cheeks. But she thought if he plays this game so should she. Composing herself, she averted her eyes as though she did not recognize or see him there. The elevator came to a stop on her floor first, thank goodness.
She got off the elevator, composed herself and told her that that silly game was over. It was one of those just for entertainment's sake thing. She started to get busy. Her boss has not checked up on her yet. Probably swamped, too.
Then there was a tap on her cubicle wall. She looked up and she could not believe her eyes. It was the same elevator and van guy. Now in front of her, and once again they are eye to eye. His brown eyes are totally mesmerizing.
"Hi." He says.
Without much time really rejoicing her luck or nursing her surprise, she calmly answers, "Hi" back at him. She was trying to calm down the butterflies in her stomach but boy were they everywhere.
Then from behind him, the girl who was seated beside him in the van, hooked up her arm again to his while typing away on her cellphone unaware of what is transpiring between the two. Then she asks the guy, "Ready for lunch, love?".
Then the girl and the guy walked out of the room leaving her stunned.
Fin.
