Everything related to "money" is considered a taboo topic. As far as I know, it is taboo to talk about it within the family and even with friends. It has been like that for most Filipinos and I have even heard that it's also like that even in other countries.
For such a long time since I was a kid, "money" is really taboo in our family. I remember that I would sometimes ask my mother how much is her salary and how much my father is earning as well. She would answer me "basta ganito" or something like that, she wouldn't disclose the exact amount of what they earn. And as a kid, I would thought "ah baka ganun talaga, bawal tanungin kung magkano ang kinikita". Because I have heard from others like my aunts as well that they don't disclose their salary, and I think I heard from other families too that the adults don't really tell the kids the exact amount. I don't understand why.
As we grow up though, my parents are already telling us the exact amounts whenever we ask them, well specifically from my mother because she handles all of our finances. She would tell us now the amount of salary she actually has (may mga bawas pa yun ng loan, Pag-IBIG, SSS, etc.), the amount of our father's pension, taxes, and all of our bills. In conclusion, the topic of money is not that too taboo anymore, right?
However, in my perspective, I am not still contented on how we talk about money. It's still taboo for me, in the aspect of saving and investing.
I understand it because I know that most of the people in my parents' generation didn't have any access to financial literacy, that's why they are not that open to saving and investing, especially my father. My mother, on the other hand, is open to that because her job is related to finance. She has investments and insurances but lacks savings. I understand that as well because we are a big family and it is kinda hard to save.
But just recently on April 25, my parents are now open to the idea of saving and investing. My mother wanted to open a bank account for savings while my father wanted to either save or invest a portion of his pension for his long-life goal of having a car.
I am really happy and proud of them on that day! For us to talk about it is a nice step.
Take note though, that my father is really not into these things, he's more into investing in Lotto. Yung tataya ka ng P20 or something, ilang years na sya tumataya at halos araw-araw. I would sometimes think that if he save it instead, maybe he could have his dream car by now. But no judgement though kasi pera nya naman yun. But it's just my opinion.
Not just my parents but also my siblings, they also have plans to open back accounts and venture into investing.
Closing Thought
In conclusion, I am just really happy that we are having progress when it comes to finances in our family. For me, finance is an important matter within the family and it is nice to be open about it with each other and talk about it instead of not talking about it at all.
If you've read my previous articles already, I am happy with these things, I am happy that people, specifically my family, are getting into saving and investing because I consider myself a financial advocate. I have a desire of making people get into financial literacy.
And here on read.cash, I do it by publishing articles related to money in the hopes that the readers will get some knowledge about it and they can apply in the real world.
That's all for now. Have a great day, everyone!
