In this article, let me share with you my movie analysis for the movies Heneral Rizal and Pay It Forward. These two movies taught me a lot of moral lessons and knowledge as well. Feel free to scroll down!
Pay It Forward
The movie entitled 'Pay it Forward' directed by Mimi Leder clearly brought us to the concept of humanity. The story rotates with an 11-year old boy who influenced others by practicing kindness and compassion. The idea started when their teacher commanded them to think of an idea to change our world and put it into action. Trevor (the eleven year old boy) accept the challenge and start his moral adventure. There are numerous tasks that he wanted to accomplish. The seventh-grader boy decided to do good things to others and he will ask them to do the same thing or in other words, to pay it forward. His kindness and compassion became an inspiration to turn people to become more humane.
His moral journey started with a homeless man named James Caviezel. He provides him lodging for a night, give him some money, look for a job, and a chance to clean himself by taking a shower. His second good deed is all about Eugene who was lost and wanted to be with his mother and to make things right, fix his relationship with his mother. The third one is he must be able to help his schoolmate who is always experiencing bullying. Trevor's idea of 'pay it forward' had a huge positive impact more than he realized.
The film shows that Trevor fail several time with his idea but he always trust the process that someday, people in his community will learn to do good things to others. He was hoping that every person may participate and turn it into practice to have a better world. The film was great and had a positive idea in order for us to be on the right path by doing what is morally good. It clearly gives as the thought that kindness and putting others first is an authentic act of moral beauty. It will always turn negativity to positivity and will make our surrounding more ideal and more humane.
Pay It Forward shows that everyone can make a difference by doing what is good for others. Everyone can change the world the way it is, to become better if people became generous, united and selfless. We may not know what struggles our fellows are facing in the present, but through our act of kindness and compassion, we are able to give them relief and touch of happiness. The movie is a must watch film for the reason that it has an idea that could be an inspiration for everyone for us to be good and to do what is good. Let’s remember the golden rule “Do unto others what you want others do unto you”. Do good to your fellow, the same thing may go. If you have problems and someone is there to offer help, you are so blessed. So, all you need to do is to pay it forward in order for us to achieve an ideal world that is full of positivity and in order to boost humanity.
What is the main issue discussed in the film?
The film enlightened us to understand what nationalism is, as well as what it really means to be a Filipino. At the same time, it discussed how cruel colonizers are, how they mistreat our ancestors, claiming their superiority. The way Paciano elaborate how Filipinos sacrifice their own life back then, to seek revolution, it tells us reason to make a change in today's generation. We are all 'Pepe', we can be one of the modern Jose Rizal, and those are the ones who seek change in the possible way they can.
What do you think is the position/stand of the filmmaker on the issue based on how she presented her subjects?
She stand as the voice of every Filipino, such as how Paciano said this line "Kung bakit sa bawat yugto ng pakikibaka, laging talo ang mga Pilipino." It is painful to know that we've lose too much, we gave too much. They almost took it all, and they're still satisfied of what they got. These colonizers believe in their superiority, they believe they are on the highest state because they excel in many ways. As Paciano said, God didn't create humans to degrade other mankind, it is not our purpose to steal, and that is inhumane act. The filmmaker presented her thoughts as a human and as a Filipino, in a way to reach our hearts and enlightened us. She is Pepe in her own way, and she aims to create more Pepe in today's generation. Spreading knowledge about nationalism and educating us on what does it mean to be a Filipino.
What part of the film had the biggest impact on you and why? How did it touch you as a human being?
The part when Paciano said, 'Pepe bumalik ka, may responsibilidad kang dapat tugunan' that strikes so hard. That Pepe doesn't talks about Jose Rizal, alone. It is applied to each one of us, Filipino. You are Pepe, I am Pepe, we can be Pepe. Pepe is alive deep down our hearts, we must not forget that. As a Filipino and as a human, we have responsibilities while we are alive, it will surely leave questions to ones we left behind, if we didn't able to fulfill it, so we must live with that and live with no regrets. This film not only enlightened Filipinos but also touch those heart and help them realize their purpose.
What did you learn from the narrative film?
I was enlightened that nationalism isn't dead, it is deep within our souls and living in our hearts. This narrative film not only teach us how early Filipinos been mistreated and suffer from cruelty of colonizers, and how our heroes do their part to help us, it also touch our hearts and encourage us to do our part. It tells us that the long sleep is over, wake up and be the change. We deal with our own fight in this generation, we must the Pepe that this generation needs.
