“Defeat…is it a new experience, Yami?” Maverick asked two days later, his eyes fixed on the downcast but still defiant man in front of him.
“Hardly.”
“Then I guess you have a personal score with Kendrick, no? It appears that he hit a nerve during your fight, and things have become more personal. Which is to the benefit of my, or do I say, our common goal, isn’t it?”
“How? How does the animosity we bear towards each other benefit this goal of ours?” Yami asked, lifting an eyebrow. He was clearly not comfortable in the presence of this man, at least not in this condition. Bandages here and there, huge plasters and the like, he looked like he had survived a fatal auto-crash. Thankfully, with each nightfall, the injuries healed faster. Tonight, there would be little to no moonlight. Surely they’d all close up today, the damned wounds.
“Well, maybe now you’ll no longer see this as just a mission, but as a mission to restore your dignity and honor or something like that. That is if you have one anyway. I remember a saying that goes ‘No honor amongst thieves…”
“Don’t consider me as being of a similar nature with you. We are not working towards the same goal. We just have an agreement, we’re not on the same page as concerns what is to happen to the other swords. All I want is to be left alone, and that’s why I reached this compromise.” Yami said, making no effort to disguise the disgust on his face.
“Well yes, terms, terminologies, diction. It still boils down to one thing: you’re working for me, and we as a whole are working towards the possession of the other swords. If they come to battle us, they’ll battle you and me as one, no? Working for me, and working with me – they are more or less the same thing in our case, Yami.”
“Whatever.”
“Brilliant,” Maverick said, a fake but surprisingly patronizing smile plastered on his face. “Well, Yami, I do say that the personal, er, affair, If I may, you have with this Kendrick might prove to be a source of enhanced motivation to take him out. Well then, all things being equal, I think we can count the Light Sword as being ours already, that is, except you’ll lose to…”
“That is not even a remote possibility,” Yami said, still seething with rage.
“And then, that’s that. Rest, recuperate, we still have to find one more wielder, and we’ll also need to find where Kendrick is traveling to so we can ascertain the exact location of their hideout if possible.”
As Maverick watched Yami’s receding figure, he smiled.
The battle must have been a sight. Kendrick…just what type of man are you?

Kendrick’s body ached as he boarded the bus. Yes, he’d healed considerably fast, it had been quite rainy the past 48 hours, but a few patches of sunlight had been enough to return life to his numb nerves and muscles, and although some of the deeper wounds were on a good road to complete healing, he wasn’t still in good shape to battle.
That was a real pity since he had counted six men who were following him aboard this bus. Thankfully, he’d booked a window seat, and as the sun finally came out and cast its rays through his open window, he could feel the energy pulse through his body.
They were all as good as dead.

“Come on, even my grannie can do better than that!” Frost called out cheekily, drawing a lot of sighs from Lance.
They were both sparring in the reduced gravity zone while I was still improving on my movements. It was annoying that Lance was more athletic than me; even if he wasn’t perfect, he had more coordinated movements and was in a better place to spar with her than me.
Even though I really did need to be with her.
“Damn it,” I muttered. Now was not the time for sulking over this. If I could get better, then I would have a better shot at impressing her. That was for sure.
I put more effort into it, managing to throw two backflips in a row. When the gravity was returned, I landed and tried to catch my breath as Frost handed me a bottle of water.
“Nice moves,” she said, playfully slapping my ass. I looked at her and smirked.
“What are you thinking? You know you can’t do that to a girl, right?” she said, smiling in a way that told me she did not mean any word of it.
“I stand for gender equality, Frostie,” I said, winking as I walked towards her.
“You’re going to do it now?” she said, all puppy-eyed. But I could swear she was arching her back.
“Nah, I want it to be a surp…”
“CHRIST I AM HERE YOU FRIGGIN’ MATING LIONS!” Lance screamed, ending the innuendo that had been building up. We all burst into laughter, and then I realized that even without any active effort on Frost’s part, we had all started getting along with each other.
“What are you smiling at?” Frost asked, pinching my cheek.
“Nothing. And enjoy yourself, you keep on adding to the list of favors I’ll return when I’m ready.”
“You’re really gonna pinch these rosy cheeks?” she asked, puffing her cheeks. She did look cute.
“No, the other ones.”
“You jerk!” she laughed, punching my arm while we walked out.
Nightfall came, but I didn’t feel sleepy. Maybe I’d slept too much earlier, but I just sat at the window, drinking some warm milk and trying, no matter how futile, to fall asleep.
“Well, you’re quite the nightcrawler.”
I turned to see Frost in a big blue hoodie with no visible pants on looking as sexy as sin. Well, the hoodie did reach her mid-thighs, but the buttery look of her tanned thighs was a sight for sore eyes nevertheless.
“I could say the same. You like blue a lot, and you also like…”
“Making your eyes pop out of your head? I know.” She said, taking a seat beside me.
“That’s one way to put it.”
We were looking into each other’s eyes now, and the innuendo was building again. I couldn’t even blink; it was too intense, the whole situation.
She lightly pinched my cheeks and asked “Do you always get these intense with girls you don’t know from Adam?” she asked, blushing. It was obvious she was feeling the vibe too; lucky me.
“No, only with girls I want to know.”
“Then,” she said, locking her fingers with mine, “what do you want to know?”

She sat atop a tree branch delicately, her eyes fixed on the green mamba she’d impaled with her blade. She knew what she was doing here, she’d been here for most of her life. This sacred forest, home to a now-extinct civilization and people was now the final convening for all the guardians.
Moira let the body of the snake drop to the swampy waters below and sighed.
When the hell would they be here?
