Who Would Have Thought?
There are a lot of truths buried beneath the surface and we have to dig deeper to even come close to finding them. Sometimes it takes us losing our way to find out the truth and often it requires us not becoming like those who hurt us and still, the truth would still come out eventually. That's the story of Daniel and how his childhood shaped who he is...till today.
Daniel had a wonderful family and they might not have everything others had but they surely never lacked the basics that would make him covet other people's things. He is the only child of his parents, so he is used to getting attention even from his Paternal grandmother. It's a small family but you can see how tightly knit they were. The azure sky promised Daniel a beautiful morning that day when he briefly woke up only to sleep again since it was Saturday but he wasn't prepared for what was to come next later that day.
He was still on his bed, cuddling up under his sheet when his father came into his room to tell him they would soon be leaving for the wedding they talked about. Of course, he wasn't going with them but the father thought to check up on him before leaving with his wife. He dropped $10 under the pillow for him since he was still enjoying his sleep and he left. He explained to Daniel's grandmother and he left with Daniel's mother.
If they could, they would have ignored the invitation but it's from a family member which makes it even more difficult to get out of. The party went well until late into the night. They were on their way back when they got hit by a drunk driver. Strangely, the driver only got some scratches but Daniel's parents got injured the more. They couldn't even make it to the hospital as they died on the way there after the emergency response unit picked them up.
They contacted Daniel's grandmother who is the emergency contact they have and broke the news to her. She couldn't stop crying and she didn't even know how to break it to an 8-year old that his parents are no longer alive. They had fun the night before only for them to be gone without a warning.
The grandmother finally broke the news to him and he almost ran mad. He couldn't believe it and he was screaming and wailing at the same time. He blamed himself and even God for not taking care of his parents. He wished he has seen their faces at least that morning before they left, only if he wasn't sleeping. What's done is done but his heart was heavy with words unspoken and feelings unexpressed.
It was around a week or so that the lawyer of the drunk driver came around the house to bring a settlement offer to the grandmother. Daniel sat down on the stairs, looking at them. He heard when the lawyer said that that's the only offer they can present to her. The grandmother didn't want to bother herself with too much but Daniel saw the lawyer as emotionless and wicked all because he wanted to do his job. He allowed the man to go away without being punished and now decide to pay them off instead. He felt his grandmother was strong armed into accepting the deal.
That was the day he decided to become a lawyer so he can stand up for justice for many others and hopefully, a day will come when he would have a case with this shady lawyer so he can remind him of how terrible a person he is. As fate would have it, his law firm had a case which involves this name. He had never forgotten that man's name ever since he was little and the moment he asked around if it was the same lawyer on the case, he begged his superiors to let him handle the case. He agreed because he is also a very good lawyer and knows how to win, whatever it takes.
The case required Daniel's client to pay a huge sum to some older people and Daniel, being blinded by revenge, twisted the whole case, found a loophole which he hammered on and his client ended up paying nothing. Before the case came up, he went to the man's office to introduce himself and reminded him of the case many years ago. The older lawyer told him sorry and he isn't that kind of lawyer anymore but sorry wasn't going to cut it for Daniel and that's why he stuck this case against the older lawyer.
The older lawyer went to him after Daniel just finished one of his depositions and told him that he might have won the case against him and he is sure that made him feel good about himself but he reminded Daniel that he had just become like his older self back in the day because he became like the person that hurt him. Before he left, he brought a file and dropped it on Daniel's chest for him to read which indicated that his father also had too much to drink the night he was killed in the car, alongside his mother. His jaw dropped and he was unable to pick it up.
The older lawyer told him that was how he was able to convince his grandmother to take the settlement because they can also easily twist the story because of the development. That's why the grandmother accepted the offer and why he decided not to tell Daniel about it because she didn't want him to blame his father for the death and the accident.
