What Else Can We Do?
February 7, 2022
Have you ever felt like the world wants us to be perfect despite its imperfections? But what can we do when we know who we wanna be isn't perfect?
Isabel, the most beautiful and perfect member of the Madrigal family can bloom flowers perfectly and Abuela always has high expectations of her. Being considered perfect, she always wanted to please her family. There should be no flaws, no errors, no ugly, no imperfect, no shoddy creations, everything should be perfect, meeting the high expectations and concerned about what people around here would say about her. It seemed like she was living in the head of others.
Until unexpected circumstances happened that led to unforeseen revelations. Little did others know that she's been struggling to please everyone. Despite being called perfect, deep inside, she's unhappy, incomplete, and imperfect. And she wants to do more than just blooming roses and pretty flowers.
Her song "What Else Can I Do?" only conveys that she doesn't want to be perfect, that she want to do new more things .
That she can do more than blooming roses and other beautiful flowers. She wanted to do more than what her gift could do, if only she was allowed to do so. Only if Abuela, her grandmother, would permit her to be imperfect and do things that others thought she can't do. Only if she could be imperfect.
This song resonates with our real life. Despite living in this imperfect world, we always wanted to please everyone, to be accepted and appreciated, to be perfect in front of other people. Because we don't want to receive discrimination, negative feedback, and reactions. So as much as possible, we always wanted to be perfect, pretty, and flawless.
Whether you admit it or not, you also have thought to be perfect just to be accepted by this judgemental society. The unjust discrimination in this world makes us pity for ourselves, driving our self-esteem to go lower and lower, and we tend to walk on the crowd with heads bowing, and ashamed of our own selves.
We want to be pretty when we saw pretty people confidently walking on the street. We want to be smart when we see people excelling in the field they have chosen. We want to be talented when we see people gaining the public's attention and appreciation. We wanted to be perfect just so we could feel how to live in a perfect world with no unjust discrimination.
However, we don't need to be perfect, because we were all born imperfect, yet, beautiful in our own unique way. We just have to believe in ourselves that we can also do what others can. We just have to build our self-confidence higher and stronger so we could walk on the crowd with heads high. We just have to appreciate the beauty and talent God gave us.
We don't need to be perfect and live in the heads of other people. Because we are beautifully perfect in our own unique imperfections. We just have to do what makes us happy without compromising our self-esteem, and confidently live in this world without absorbing its negative imperfections and not minding the unjust discrimination.
And if there is one thing we should be doing, it's this line of the song....
πΆπΆ"Seize the moment, keep goin'"πΆπΆ
Indeed, we should seize every moment we have in this world because life is too short to live in high expectations, mind the negative imperfections, and unjust discrimination. We should live our own life happily not in the minds of pessimistic people. Besides, we can do more beautiful things in our imperfect unique way. We just have to believe in ourselves π.

This movie is pure gold, my dear Jane. This is the best way Disney has shown that the expectations that family can have from us, sometimes can be so toxic
