My Sunday Hobbies (and the benefits of having a hobby) Sunday is my best time to rest, to roam around the city, to do anything I want to, and that includes my hobbies. My Sunday routines are usually sleeping for long hours, eating, watching movies, roaming around the city and doing my hobbies. Everytime I'm lazy to walk around, I just stayed at the park near home. I usually lay down a mat where I can sit down and do my hobbies, or even take a nap. Aside from photography, another hobby of mine is drawing. When I was still in primary, I liked making sketches and copying pretty images from my books. I'm not actually good at it, but I love art. I didn't pursue this hobby when I reached secondary as well as when I was in college. Just doing art homework, but didn't mind pursuing it. After college, I had time to draw again. During my boredom moments, and nothing to watch on the television, I took out my notebook and pencil then start sketching anything that popped on my mind. The very hard part in sketching a person is making the face, I really need more practice on that part as well as in shading. They said that, the technique of having a good sketch it through shading. Shading is a technique that allows for depth and character to be added to an illustration. It shows the levels of darkness in drawing by placing darker shades to show shadows and less dense shades to highlight lighter areas. I admire the sketches of @Imdadul.hoque @Hanzell @Athai @Sajib @Israat and the paintings of @ZiraZir and @Aella. Their artworks motivates me to pursue my art skills. Someday I will be good in art like them. 😊
I think I got this ability from my father, he is good in drawing especially in making a house plan, he's the one who design our house. I guess he can be a good architect or engineer if he will only pursue that course, but too old to study again. 😅 Another hobby of mine during Sunday is cross-stitching. Cross-stitch is a form of sewing and a popular form of counted-thread embroidery in which X-shaped stitches in a tiled, raster-like pattern are used to form a picture. I started doing this hobby of stitching here in Hong Kong.
I was influenced by some filipinos here who are doing stitching at the park as well. At first it was hard, I need to count the threads on a piece of evenweave fabric in each direction so that the stitches are of uniform size and appearance. I chose The Last Supper because I want to frame and display this on our wall at the dining area at home. I started making this last year, but not done yet until now. 😅 I hope I can finish this before my contract ends next year. 😂 Do you know that there are benefits of having a hobby? By focusing on a non-work-related task, you're giving your mind something else to focus on. And when you really get in the flow, all of your worries and stresses seem to fade away. **6. Hobbies promote staying present.** If you really love what you're doing, you tend to get in the flow or zone and really, truly focus on the moment. When working on an illustration, hours can magically fly by because it can make you focused on what you're doing. Instead of worrying about the future or dwelling on the past, you're completely and undeniably in the present. **7. Hobbies have physical health benefits.** Research has found that engaging in enjoyable activities during down time were associated with lower blood pressure, total cortisol, waist circumference, and body mass index. Engaging in these activities also correlated to higher levels of positive psychosocial states and lower levels of depression and negative affect. Hobbies are good for your mind *and* your body. Finding a new hobby isn't always easy. You can't just force yourself to like something; it has to come naturally. So those are my hobbies during Sunday if I am lazy to roam around -- drawing and cross-stitching, but what I love the most is photography.

My hobby is reading. Thanks to books, we immerse ourselves in different eras, we travel to different countries and planets. For example, after reading J. Verne’s story “Around the World in Eighty Days,” we travel to many countries with the protagonist. And thanks to the novel "Aelita", readers along with AN Tolstoy fall on Mars. Reading gives us food for thought. We develop mentally. Immersing ourselves in the book, we take care of some heroes, sympathize with some, hate others. From books we learn new information about the world, people, animals, which we can then apply in everyday life. We are immersed in various historical events, for example, from the work of EM Remarque we learn about the situation in Europe during the First World War and after it. And in the epic novel LN
True. That's on of my hobbies too. It's just that, I am more on writing here now than reading books. But I like doing it when I am bored of watching the same kind of videos or lazy to go out. And yes, we immerse ourselves in different eras, gain knowledge and ideas which can be applied in writing,...have you read the book "I Am David"? Itself really a moving book.

I love indulging in my hobbies too after I am done with work and chores. It brings a sense of anticipation in looking forward to it, calmness in doing them and satisfaction in completing them. I like photography and drawing too, although I am most involved in needle crafts. The last supper is beautiful. Love the colours and I wish you luck in finishing it :) I think every hobby is a journey. Sometimes the destination is not clearly seen but we enjoy the adventure of going somewhere and there is so much to learn along the way. True.. that feeling after completing my artworks is overwhelming. I really wish I could finish this cross-stitching before the year ends.. 😅 And through hobbies, we also meet new friends. Just like here, i was influenced by other overseas workers here to do that cross-stitching. At first I just love seeing them doing that, then i became fond of it and bought one for me. Btw, thank you introducing that community. I would love to see more handcrafts there.
I always have that worry too, when and if I can complete a project I start. Is this a Christmas present? I usually use a purpose to drive me to complete them. It helps... sometimes :D. Other times, I will just push it to the next purpose or dateline hehe. If Christmas doesn't work, lets try for New Year's. But we just need to keep pushing and working on it little by little everyday. I used to be able to do a big piece of cross stitch when I was much younger but nowadays, my patience, dedication and persistence run a little low :D But I think you can do it. By the way, I think the drawing you did is beautiful too. Love the violin and the sense of coldness that exudes from the girl. The face can be an abstract somewhat, doesn't have to look exactly like her :) Ah yes, I noticed too that many from Philippines do crafts, particularly crochet. The CraftWorks community is small but I am happy to read so far from 2 of its members :) There are many others who post their crafts on this platform too but they prefer to post within their circle which is fine.
I really hope i can finish it..haha... sometimes my eyes gave up so I stop doing it. And about my drawing, thank you. I'm still practicing more to get a perfect face. 😅 although there isn't perfect in art. There are many ways to show art. There are even ugly paintings for some but to the creator it's called art. And yes, filipinos like making handcrafts. It's one of our ability, creative in doing such things. And sometimes, we recycle used materials and make it into a new crafts. It's really enjoyable. I'll help you promote that community next time. 😊
Haha yah.. I know what you mean. I have a cross stitch (I think 2 or 3) which I started more than 5 years ago and have not been completed :D I can get quite fickle too, moving from one 1/4 done project to another and ended up with lots of 1/4 projects haha. You are right, I think this is where art is in the eye of the beholder holds true :) Ah yes, filipinos are very talented and good singers too :) Thank you in advance for the help to promote the community :) Unfortunately, I have rejected some articles which did not have much description about the craft they shared. Interestingly, when I asked them to provide more details about their work, they do not reply or answer the questions, which made me wonder if the work was theirs.
I also did the same to my art is cool community. Some just submit articles with only photos on it, I told them to write something about it before i approved their articles as this is a blogging site, stories always matters. And btw bout your unfinished cross-stitch, I guess the colors of that are now faded. 😅 im also worried about that matter for my last supper, lol
Ah cool. Yah art is cool indeed :) It was challenging to choose the top 15s and top 10s! You know what, I have not seen my projects for a long time. Colors fading is one thing, I heard that the thread disintegrates too! :D
Indeed it was a tough tasks for us critics. I guess I'll post the results tomorrow. You should check out your peojects. I want to frame my cross-stitch once I finished it.. i don't want the colors to fade
I agree. Hobbies has lots of benefits to oneself. It boosts our confidence, creativity and improve our attentiveness that's why having a nice hobby is really good. I like on how you manage to do your hobby even you often busy. By the way, nice photos dears.

I love arts too. In school days I am into pencil drawing. I can draw everything except face portrait 😅 it's kinda difficult to try.. but later on coz of work I stop and my hand are shaking so I rarely draw using pencil. But I didn't stop.. I switched to painting since it's my dream in my childhood.. but I am still learning from this. And it's enjoyable. It doesn't matter if my hands are shaking at all..
Shaking hands.. lol.. i have that sometimes too.. "pasmado" 😂 what i want to learn next is painting. i really love to.. I'm envious to my 14 y.o. little sister, she's even good at art than me. 😂
Hobbies, are very important, because they help you to focus, on what you like, and helps creativity. I have a friend who has no hobbies, and mumbles, about other's lives. Disaster!

I am amazed by your article, I definitely agree with hobbies having positive impact on our mental health, it is so relaxing when we don’ t have to think about life neccessary thing and can pay attention just to that hobby activity. It is pure connecton with ourselves as you mentioned in the article and that’s great. I like your drawing pretty much, I think if you added some shading it could underline it as well. But speaking about lineart I like it very much. I amdire also your cross-stitching hobby, wow I can imagine how relaxing it can be, can I find some of ur artwork made by this technique in here on RC? Thank you for that wonderful comment of yours and thanks for liking my drawing. 😊 I'm not actually done yet with that, i still need to do some shading and coloring coz i want to surprise this kid at home..it would be my gift to her before I leave this house. This is actually my first time to share my art hobby here. I usually just read articles about those techniques in art by aforementioned names. you can check their profiles. 😁 I'm also learning from their artworks..

Yes i need more practice haha esp in shading and drawing the face.. I'm more on drawing animes and manga when i was younger.. i seldom do cross-stitching coz it's actually hurting to eyes.. lol
You can start per part on the face. there's something called subject study where you simply draw one feature or object in almost all angles of light and in different shapes. That's one of the basics i was taught ;;-;; i can't do cross stitching. My hands don't cooperate with hand stitching so i just sew
Sometimes I'm watching tutorial videos on youtube but it's really hard once i tried it. 😂 I like sewing even before, and got curious bout cross-stitching so i tried it as well.. it's fun actually..
Wow. Your sketch was great and you can still practice more to perfect it. The cross-stitching takes time, really. It is not like drawing and sketching that you could finish in just a day or two. But, I love your idea of framing your cross-stitched. I don't think I have a particular hobby. I love watching series, movies, and documentaries. I also love eating. Also, reading and writing were my hobbies too. I have a lot. 🤩😁
Through those things, you will be able to know your hobby. it comes naturally. 😊
