We have been so blessed and we oftentimes forget it. It must have been in our nature to be unsatisfied of things, and sometimes.. ungrateful.
This is a blog last Thursday, 14th of October, that has been stucked in the drafts, because I was not able to publish it, (or at least I forgot to).
My spare time was spent watching some viral videos on Facebook. This social media app is now longer just for sharing pictures, or messaging online, it has also become a mini-Youtube, and I admit that more than 50% of my reason using Facebook is to watch various clips on my freetime.
I've watched quite a lot within the few hours. Mostly about funny animal compilation, inspirational speeches, movie reviews, and heart-touching ones—the later being the cause of the birth of this article.
Appreciating things and not taking these for granted
Clip 1 is a video of color blind people seeing color for the first time. In each video, a special kind of eye glasses were gifted to the people, and all of their reactions after wearing the glasses were so precious. I could not also help but be emotional when I saw them crying after putting those special glasses on.
This made me see how others have lived their lives without seeing how vibrantly beautiful this world is with different colors. To these color blind people, it's like they are babies seeing for the first time. Ages varied; there was a teenager, a middle-aged one, and a guy in his 60s or 70s. None of them missed shedding tears of joy because of this special gift from their loved ones.
How advanced technology has become, that it is now possible to see colors even you are color blind. I wonder how that glasses cost, or when they were invented, but seeing these clips made me somehow guess that they're difficult to have.
For us people who aren't color blind, seeing variety of colors is normal, and we tend to take it for granted. We tend to not appreciate this tuny details that others long for. Like seeing how blue the sky is, or how green the trees are, or how beautiful the flowers are for their varying colors. We always see those blues, reds, oranges, greens and yellows, yet, we seem to not appreciate it.
I remember a colleague of mine who is color blind. His work deals with colors, as some spreadsheet applications allow to categorize data by colors, like green, yellow, or blue, sometimes different shades of a single color also means different category. I wonder how he was able to work with these despite being color blind. He said, that since he sees colors differently, he has learned to memorize what each color he sees really meant—color X (as he sees it) is actually blue, color Z is actually yellow, and so on. Remembering this again, I now think this colleague's amazing. And that I am lucky that I see colors just how they appear.
Clip 2, on the other hand, is about the heartwarming homecoming of every person from the military. It ranged from a son surprising his father, and mothers greeting their children, because yes, we got women in the military, too.
There are lucky people like us who don't experience being away from our loved ones. We celebrate together on holidays, and sleep within the same houe when the day ends. However, there are people who sacrifice being with their families, to work for the welfare of the nation. People in the army, or navy, are examples of that.
We can see that we oftentimes take for granted two things here: our sense of being with our loved ones, and the fact that we have people working in the background nonstop to protect us citizens of a country.
I hope we will all take a moment to appreciate how we enjoy being with pur families, how we can conveniently celebrate with them even on holidays, on birthdays, and other occasions, when others don't have that luxury. And may we also appreciate these people who risk their lives everyday just to serve our nations, and are responsible for our safety and protection.
These videos I mentioned are just two out of many things we take for granted. There are more, from the simplest cases of being healthy, eating three square meals a day (not yet including snacks im the day), to the most complicated, like finishing education, or having a stable job. It may surprise us at times, that other people can't have these things we currently enjoy, and sometimes, even complain of.
This is just a few of those nights where instead of having unproductive time, I learned a lot from watching Facebook clips. It made me hope that these kinds of videos visit everyone's feeds, instead of those nonsense videos that don't have values.
The world is messy enough, we need more contents that will make us remember just how pure and beautiful we are as humans in this chaotic place. We need contents that will remind us to not take things for granted, and instead be grateful for it, because happiness is in appreciating even small things.
Hello there!
Could you imagine this? A Thursday article published in a Saturday? LOL, no worries, one more is about to be piblished today, and that one is a Friday article. I am sorry I messed up on this one. My plans on publishing these articles were all delayed because of my crappy internet, phone, and because I am sleepy head. Yes, you read the last one right. I set alarms for this to be published in the early times, but I could not wake up from the alarms I set. Haha!
Anyway, I hope you learned some insights on this one. Hoping you'll anticipate on my future articles, too, by subscribing. Until next time!
