Salamat Shoppee (Thanks Shoppee)
Are you fond of shopping online? Be it Lazada, Shoppee, Amazon, or any other online shopping sites? I am also one of those folks that we call shoppeeholics. I mean, it's just so fun and convenient to shop around while you are comfortably lying in your bed or on the couch.
You can pick out your necessities right at your fingertips and you can find a lot of interesting stuff even though they aren't really necessary, but they're quite cheap and they have the free shipping voucher attached to them. You'll surely try to convince yourself that you are better off buying those things.
Anyhow, as we fall deeper and deeper in love with buying things online, we also become vulnerable to scams and tricks that some people utilize to take advantage of our trust and belief in the system.
There's this one modus that is going around social media that I think everyone should be aware of. This scam is exploiting the cash-on-delivery or COD mode of payment when it comes to online shopping.
How does it Work?
The modus is simple and really cunning. The scammer will choose a household wherein there are several people living under one roof. For example a family of 4, a father, a mother, a daughter, and a son.
The concept is to deliver a bogus package ordered by any one of them and they will make the others pay for it instead of the named target.
You can imagine it this way.
Let's say the daughter goes to work and the son goes to school. The father also goes to work and the mother is left alone in the house. Let's say that the scammer's named target is the daughter.
The scammer will then go to the house and pose as a delivery guy from Shoppee or Lazada. He will bring a parcel that is enclosed and packed. He knocks on the door and the mother answers.
"Good day, Madam, Shoppee delivery." says the good scammer.
"I have a delivery for Ms. Jane Doe." the good scammer will surely know the name of the person if he does his job right.
"It's COD, 3,200 pesos."
The unsuspecting mother would just take out her wallet and pay for the package since it was ordered by her daughter. In other cases, the mother may check with the daughter to confirm this delivery, that will be the best way possible but some cunning scammers may know how to use situations or words to prevent someone to do just that. They can rush you into making the decision, they could sway you with a barrage of words until you forget what you want to do in the first place. A lot of things could be done.
The mother pays the amount of 3,200 pesos. She receives the package and the scammer goes on his merry way.
The daughter arrives in the afternoon and the mother shows her the package she received and paid for. The daughter acts surprised and doesn't know of any incoming package she ordered.
They opened up the parcel and to their surprise, there were a bunch of rocks collected from who knows where.
They were both angry at each other and they quarreled into the night until the father came. He then paid for the 3,200 and released a decree that COD shall not be used again, always pay for deliveries in advance.
Epilogue
The scam was simple and it could have happened to anyone. Heck it could have happened to me. But even from before I have always paid my deliveries in advance, or after? Lol I just use my credit to pay for them. Turns out, it's safer that way.
Even before I knew any specific scams like this one. I already told my household members that I am not ordering anything online to be paid upon delivery. One, it could be a hassle to the receiver since I am not always at home. Two, the receiver may not have enough money to spare when the delivery comes. If I buy anything online, I always pay for it in advance and the receiver will just have to take it, nothing more nothing less.
Bear in mind that what I have narrated before you is just a version of the scam. It may come in various disguises or versions. The criminals will be as creative as they can just to take away some or most of your hard-earned money. So always be aware and always be vigilant.
