Otso Pa... (8 More)
Life's really hard nowadays. It's as hard as the sausages I have inside my freezer. Gasoline prices hike almost every week and the cost of living just grows and grows every day. The only thing that's not increasing is the wage rate here in our place. Damn it. And that's why I really need to have some extra income aside from my salary from my daily 9-5.
I have tried almost everything, online and offline. I have worked as a blogger for some companies, I have been a virtual assistant to some people, and I have written ads for some corporations. And of course, I experienced life in a flea market where I sold many kinds of items with different promos and different gimmicks.
Battling it out with other vendors and the buyers, I shout all day every day on top of my lungs to solicit some attention to my business.
"Bili na, bili na. Miss miss, bili kan' tutbrash! May libre kang tutpaste. Sige na sige na, may kasama pa pong kendi, atsaka po ketchup!" (Buy now buy now, buy toothbrush, you get free toothpaste, there's also candy and you a packet of catsup.)
Oh what sorts of things that I have done for money. What kind of things I put on for sale.
Aside from dry goods like that, I also tried to sell processed foods. I walked around the market holding my long and hard sausage to entice customers. I always walk around with a frozen sausage in hand to let the buyers see what I could offer. My sausage was just so thick and it's quite long because it's Hungarian sausage made so dense so it is compact. I sell some spicy sausages too. The moment you put it in your mouth, you'll really moan from the hotness.
Since I always chase around money, I even tried to deliver my own goods to my customers' houses. For an additional fee of course.
One day, I was outside minding my own business and I got a phone call from one of my patrons.
"Yes Ms. Cortez?"
"Oh hey, are you free to deliver tonight?"
"Uhm? Tonight? Why tonight? I can drop by your house tomorrow morning." I replied.
"Oh no, I need you to deliver tonight, my parents are not at home. I'm alone in the house. So, don't be so shy."
I thought about it and I'm inclined to do it since I really need the money and Ms. Cortez has really been a good payer.
"Uhm. Okay. What do you want Miss?" I asked.
"Oh bring that big, that long, and that hard sausage of yours."
I don't know what it is, maybe it was being under the sun for so long that my throat felt dried and I gulped a huge amount of saliva right there and then.
"How many packs do you need?"
"Just bring one, one is all I need. Don't worry, I'll pay for the whole pack. I just really need to stuff myself and shove that sausage in my mouth."
"Alright, I'll see you tonight."
The night came and just as discussed, I went over to her house with a sausage in my hand. I knocked on the door and it seemed as though she was waiting because the door opened on my second knock.
I swear to you, she looked like she came straight out from those liquor calendars where a girl on a two-piece bikini is modeling, but in this case, she was wearing a thin and really revealing night-gown.
She hurriedly grabbed my sausage and dragged me inside. She pushed me down on the sofa and her eyes were really fixated on the sausage I was holding. And the next moments were something I could not ever narrate in front of anyone.
The next thing I remember was counting the money and the change she gave me. I was seated on the couch while she was in the bathroom. I counted once, twice, but still, I couldn't tally the money she gave. It seemed like I was a few coins short. And then I told her.
"Miss, kulang pa po. (You still owe me some)"
"How much?" she asked.
"Ahm... Otso nalang, otso pa. Otso pa ung bayad mo. (8, you still owe me 8.)"
And I don't know what it was I said and she smiled at me and slowly walked towards me and then knelt on the carpeted floor.
Wew, life's really hard when you don't know where your next meal would come from.
Hi!
This story is inspired by a song from the band Grin Department. I really like this song, it tackles the poverty we face in our country. Although we have been at it for decades, we are still hopeful that one day, somehow, things will change.
Thank you for visiting and I hope that you enjoyed this one, until we read again...
Cheers!!!
