Today is World Healthy Food Day.
Our hardworking 5th grade students applied their knowledge of biology in a creative and imaginative way about the importance of a varied and healthy diet.
This year, World Food Day, October 16, is marked under the slogan: "Grow, feed, support. All together. Our actions are our future ”with a focus on strengthening food systems and reducing the number of hungry people in the world.
World Food Day 2020 marks the 75th anniversary of FAO as countries around the world deal with the COVID-19 pandemic and its aftermath.
Preserving access to safe food is and remains part of the response to the COVID-19 pandemic, especially for poor countries where the pandemic has led to an even more pronounced economic crisis. At this time, it is important to provide support to food heroes - farmers and all employees in the food production chain that enable a safe path of food from the field to the table.
Hunger on our planet. Over two billion people do not have access to sufficient health-safe food. By 2050, that number is expected to be 10 billion people.
The COVID-19 pandemic is increasing the number of hungry people. Nearly 690 million people worldwide are hungry, which is 10 million more than in 2019. Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, this number could increase by another 83-132 million people.
High cost of malnutrition. Malnutrition (including malnutrition and micronutrient deficiencies), as well as malnutrition and obesity, affect the global economy by an average of $ 3.5 trillion per year.
Time for action. The steady increase in the number of hungry people since 2014, together with the increase in the number of obese people, clearly indicates the need to intensify activities aimed at strengthening the food production system.
Nurture, feed, support. Despite the fact that there are at least 30,000 edible plants, today 66% of total crops are made up of only nine plant species. We need to grow a variety of foods to feed the world.
Within the development and preparation of countries' plans for recovery from the consequences of the COVID-19 pandemic, it is necessary to use the opportunity to develop and adopt innovative solutions to improve the food production system based on scientific evidence.
World Food Day calls for global solidarity in order to help everyone, especially the most vulnerable populations, recover from the crisis. The aim is also to increase the resilience of food production systems to growing challenges, including climate change, to make health-safe food of adequate nutritional value available to all, and to ensure a dignified life for workers employed in food production.
Digital technologies are key to transforming the way food is produced, processed, traded and consumed and to build more resilient and powerful food production systems. They have the potential to bridge the large digital divide between developed and developing countries, cities and rural areas, men and women, young and old. Digitization is unfortunately unattainable for over three billion people in the world who do not have access to the Internet, most of whom live in rural and remote areas.
Joint activities in 150 countries make World Food Day one of the most frequently marked dates in the Public Health Calendar. Together, government governments, businesses, NGOs and the media organize various events in order to advocate for the general public to help the hungry and to provide conditions for proper nutrition for all.
