This life is a funny one and we can't tell how quickly things can switch or turn around. There is no certain manual to know how events would unfold but then we take each day as it comes because we have so much uncertainty in this life. We just have to live and learn from experiences while trying to be the best we can be.
Lizzy has been used to having her heart broken and ever since she has been 22 years old and she has been with guys, she knew not to get her hopes up. Her last relationship that completely made her draw the lines where a relationship is concerned was that of Tunde. She swore never to fall in love again.
Tomi has been a very good friend and they go way back. She has always been that ever-present friend in her life, at least the only constant thing in her life but she is the kind of friend that would know everything about you but still wouldn't open up about much where her life is concerned but Lizzy didn't mind as long as what they share is real, at least from her side.
Tomi came around when Tunde broke Lizzy's heart and she was there throughout her healing process assuring her that everything would be fine. Tomi waited for a while to make her get back on her feet again before telling her about her engagement. She didn't want to remind her of the horrible experience with Tunde, at least that's what she said.
Lizzy wasn't too happy, not because her friend is engaged but because she still doesn't know who the guy is. How can she be friends with someone for 20 years and still, Tomi wouldn't introduce her boyfriend to her. She also re-evaluated her life because Tomi used to dump guys. The most she can stay with a guy is maybe 6 months and boom, she dumps them. She questioned why those who have a good heart end up having it broken and those who don't care about anything seem to have things going their way. She still kept her fingers crossed because she knew Tomi might change her mind again but it didn't happen this time around.
Tomi's introduction came and as the bride was called out to dance with her friends as the Nigerian tradition (where the groom and his family would have been seated and the bride would be indoor, to be accompanied by her friends), Lizzy saw a familiar face seated on the chair designated for the groom. While still dancing, she couldn't believe it was Tunde. Her dance ceased but she didn't want to make it obvious to all. She played along albeit uncomfortably until the rites started. She didn't wait till the end of the introduction and she turned off her phone. She couldn't believe Tomi would do this despite Tomi knowing Tunde through her.
She didn't go home either because she didn't want Tomi to come and check on her in the house to give any kind of excuses. She stayed in the hotel for a week before she finally decided to relocate to another city. She started on a clean slate there, thanks to her Uncle who asked her to come and work with him to get a fresh start after they discovered what happened with Tomi and her ex.
She wasn't around for the wedding either and she changed her phone number while leaving every trace behind. She gathered that three months after she left, Tomi got married to Tunde and that was all she knew about them as she blocked them off her memory.
Tomi seem to be enjoying her marriage and she did for 3 years before all hell let loose and the marriage crashed. For the first time in her life, Tomi was heartbroken especially knowing how she is the one always breaking the hearts of guys and couldn't hold on to a relationship for more than 6 months. At least, she held her marriage for 3 years and that's a record.
She was heartbroken too and she had to relocate to Abuja because the only friend she had was Lizzy and she messed that up. As life would have it, as Tomi was coming out of her wedding, Lizzy was getting hooked to a man named Benjamin. It was in the 3rd month of Lizzy's wedding she decided to relocate to Abuja.
She was coming out of the mall one evening when she bumped into Lizzy with her diamond-encrusted wedding band flashing to Tomi's face. Tomi struggled to mutter any meaningful word as she was in shock and that was the time a fine gentleman was coming out of the car as well. Tomi switched her gaze from Lizzy to Benjamin and wouldn't take her eyes off him.
Benjamin broke the ice and said "Hello, Tomi" which left Lizzy confused. Lizzy asked how they knew each other and Benjamin told her she was the lady she told her about. Apparently, Tomi broke up with Benjamin just after 2 months of dating and that was why Benjamin also left Lagos for Abuja because Tomi hooked up afterwards with his friend, Tunde. Lizzy told Benjamin this was the same Tomi she mentioned to him about and she is surprised to see her in Abuja.
"For you to be here in Abuja, I believe you either came for a one night stand or you left your husband as usual since you hardly can keep any guy" Lizzy blurted.
"We are divorced" she said. Lizzy wasn't interested and Benjamin held her hand, kissed her forehead before planting another kiss on her lips and they walked out on Tomi without saying a word. Tomi stood on the same spot for a few minutes as she allowed the tears to flow, ceaselessly...
