We all know that relationships are essential, but sometimes we take them for granted.

We may not realize just how beneficial they are until we lose one.

Relationships can supply us with a feeling of connection and belonging, make us happier and more fulfilled in life, help us learn about ourselves and others, and much more.

We need to invest time and effort into them to have strong relationships.

There are many various types of relationships, each with its benefits. So why are relationships so important? Here are six reasons you need them and how to make them strong!

Six reasons why we need relationships and how to make them strong:

As humans, we are social creatures. We need relationships to survive and thrive.

Relationship psychologist John Gottman has found that humans need at least five positive interactions for every negative one to maintain a relationship.

That means we need to be deliberate about building and maintaining strong relationships.

Here are six reasons why relationships are important:

Mental and Emotional Health: Strong relationships provide us with emotional support and stability during difficult times.

They can help reduce stress, anxiety, and depression. One analysis found that people with strong social relationships were 50% less likely to die from any cause than those who didn’t.

If you’re struggling with your mental or emotional health, reach out to a trusted friend or family member.

If you don’t have anyone you feel comfy talking to in your life, many hotlines and online resources are available.

Relieve stress: When we feel stressed, our bodies release cortisol. This can lead to physical health problems like high blood pressure and a weakened immune system.

Relationship researcher Shelly Gable has found that people who have strong social support systems experience less of an increase in cortisol levels when faced with stressful situations.

To reduce stress in your life, make time for leisure activities and hobbies that you enjoy.

Spend time with family and friends, or join a club or team. Doing things that make you happy will help reduce stress and improve your overall wellbeing.

Connection and Belonging: We all need to feel connected to others. Relationships provide us with a sense of belonging and connection.

One study found that social isolation is as harmful to our health as smoking 15 cigarettes a day (Holt-Lunstad, 2015).

If you’re feeling isolated, reach out to family and friends or join a club or group. There are also numerous online communities where you can connect with people who share your interests.

Happiness: Relationship researcher Barbara Frederickson has found that strong social relationships are associated with increased happiness (Fredrickson, 2004).

One analysis found that people with strong social relationships were twice as likely to be very satisfied with their lives (Holt-Lunstad, Smith, & Layton, 2010).

If you want to be happier, focus on building strong relationships. Spend time with friends and family, do things you enjoy together, and make an effort to connect with others.

Fulfillment: Strong relationships can also lead to a more fulfilling life.

Studies have shown that people who have close relationships are more likely to feel a sense of meaning and purpose in life (Holt-Lunstad et al., 2010).

If you’re looking for more fulfillment in life, focus on building strong relationships and connections with others.

How to Build Strong Relationships:

There are numerous things you can do to build strong, healthy relationships. Here are a few suggestions:

-Be present: When you’re with someone, be fully present and engaged in the conversation. This means putting away your gadgets, making eye contact, and actively listening.

-Communicate openly and honestly: Good communication is essential for any relationship. When you communicate openly and honestly, it helps build trust and understanding.

-Show appreciation: Take time to show your appreciation for the people in your life. Let them understand how much they mean to you through words or actions.

-Make time for each other: In our busy lives, it’s easy to let relationships fall by the wayside. But if you want to keep your relationships strong, you need to make time for them.

Schedule regular date nights or coffee dates with friends. Set aside time each week to talk on the phone or Facetime with family members who live far away.

-Be supportive: We all face challenges and hardships in life. When your loved ones face a difficult time, be there for them. Offer your support and understanding.
