Digital violence.

This is characterized by the violation of rights through digital or telematics services, the consequences of which may result in significant psychological or emotional damage, in the area of your private life or self-image. Technology impacts your life in different ways. From chatting with your friends through WhatsApp, sharing photos and videos on Instagram, searching for information on Google, among others. But you can also be exposed to various forms of digital violence that harm your integrity and those around you. In fact, online violence can be facilitated by algorithms and technological devices such as mobile and smart phones, tablets, computers, audio devices, cameras.

I believe that we should not make the mistake of believing that online violence is a separate phenomenon from violence in the 'real' world, as it is part of the continuous and interconnected manifestations of violence that we experience offline. It can also be committed with anonymity and relative impunity. Laws and policies have yet to catch up; however, good outreach on the issue can improve public awareness and pressure governments to act. Digital violence encompasses many forms of abuse, from online harassment, hate speech, doxing, cyberbullying and image-based abuse. Also gender misinformation, blackmail, exploitation and child abuse material.

We must emphasize that this problem is spreading rapidly and changing as new technologies emerge, perpetrated by different individual initiatives and organizations. In addition, survivors of digital violence have lost jobs, reputation and privacy. Let's think that the aim of these attacks is to exclude people in a position of vulnerability, such as those belonging to minority groups. The most common action is false personal information and impersonation: minors impersonate the victim and create personal spaces or fake profiles with their name. They make compromising and private confessions. In addition, they leave comments on other websites with offensive content, so that complaints and repercussions are subsequently directed at the victim.

This practice has psychological consequences and can lead to real-world violence, such as street harassment, physical and sexual assault and even femicide and murder. Women appear to be more frequent victims of digital violence, with the violence likely to be sexual and threatening in nature. The impact of digital violence on women often involves suffering from damaged reputation, reduced productivity, negative effects on mental health and psychological well-being, online and offline isolation, etc. That's why, the more anonymous we feel, and the more willing we are to do things we wouldn't do. De-individuation is the name of the phenomenon that not only poses a problem in terms of cyberbullying, but also in terms of the development of the culture of debate.

To conclude, free exchange and access to information does not equal unregulated violence. Although access to the Internet is often facilitated by private entities, it is crucial to consider this space as a public space. After all, millions of users access some of it. It is true that intermediaries are not and cannot be responsible for the initial act of violence, namely that of posting infringing material online. However, the continued accessibility or dissemination of these materials means that the victim is exposed. New technologies are tools of the first order in people's education, socialization and leisure. However, the harmful use made of them has increased among children in recent years. We are dealing with a case of cyber abuse when a minor threatens, harasses or humiliates another through the use of telematics media (Internet, cell phones, online video games or other technologies, mainly).

Have you ever been a victim of digital violence?

In that you are very right my friend, that is why it is so difficult to regulate. Definitely the use of technology must have its limits and legal regulations must be created, but even more important we ourselves create awareness about it. Regards
