Does money change people?.

I saw a picture while I swiped through people's WhatsApp statuses today, it stated.

Money doesn't change people... It unlocks character and attitude that has been jailed by poverty.

This statement got me wondering for some moment.

  • Could this be true?.

  • Or maybe in some cases and not all cases.

I'm here now, here to voice out my answers.

Does money change a person.

When I say change, I don't mean the physical kind of change, money would definitely change a tattered looking person into a clean and neat person. It would definitely change ones appearance, except the person just doesn't want to spend his/her money to look good.

The change I mean; has been stated at the beginning.

  • Character.

  • Attitude.

You'll agree with me that when one is actually poor or not doing well financially, one might tend to be really, really humble.

With the exception of some other people: Not all poor people are humble, some still tend to show out their real attitude or character.

I've seen this.

Those poor people; after they've become so wealthy.

  • Some; decides to change and starts riding others, forgetting when they were in need and how an helper came forth.

  • Forgetting that it was also an human being that picked them up from the slum to reshape them into better beings.

The second are the ones, even after they become rich.

  • They still maintain their good and generous heart. Oh yes we have these kinds too.

But I'm not here to write about the latter kinds. I'm here to write about the former.

The ones that suddenly change towards others, once they become rich.

Most people usually say, it's money that changed them. When they were poor, they were always good to others, they were always respectful, nice and generous. When they were poor, they were this... They were that...

Were they really changed by money or they had always had it in them, but poverty hid it so perfectly well?

Oh yes! That's just it. My belief is that: "money can't change people, it can only change your physical looks and other material things."

Money only unlock those character and attitude that poverty kept hidden for so long.

Someone who was so humble when he/she was poor, suddenly becomes rich and changes so much to the extent of looking down on people, shouting at people and just talking anyhow to people.

That character was there, it has always been there.

That attitude was there, it has always been there.

But the poverty kept it hidden all along.

When money finally showed its' face. It suddenly became something else.

I know of a person who is the most humble person in the world whenever he's broke or has little or nothing. His family members would always be there to render help and assistance to him during those trying times, but once that money comes. His attitude suddenly changes.

Today he went to drink,

The next day, he has an argument with his wife and sends her out of the house.

Another day, he's insulting his children all because they requested money from him to do a thing or another.

That same day, he insults his children's mother before finally giving them the money they requested for...

Another day again, he calls all his children, seat them down for hours; reminding them of the mistakes they did some months, weeks or years back.

Oh, and so much more...

Now, after he successfully squanders all the money he has, he becomes so humble and sober once again, his wife who pities him would come back again, trying to support, trying to gather few things together... Just to lend an helping hand to her husband.

He's so humble, he plays nice, plays calm, plays sweet till he gets his own money again and then the scenario repeats itself over and over again...

People are like this and that's the truth, I just don't know if it's appropriate to say: "some people are not created for wealth." Because when it comes, they end up misusing it and using it against people around them, even people who stayed through thick and thin with them.

Money reveals ones true identity.

Closing Remarks: It's awesome to always not be influenced by the things we have right now, making sure that the material things we have should be used well and not to the deterioration of others.

This would be all. Till we meet again In my next article and in yours.

Thanks for reading.

Money changes and doesn't change people it goes both ways, just depends on the person that gets the money... Some people change from being humble cause the money gets to their head, while others have always been proud with ridiculous attitudes that were just hidden till the money shows. As i said it depends on the person some people don't change or have anything brought out when money comes, they remain as humble as they've ever been.. Money is power and that goes to peoples head, just some don't get affected by it (they are really few people like that though)

This is especially for men most of them don't like to change their behavior or attitude for a simple reason because everything they purchase their wives will criticize it as the wife wants his husband to purchase clothes that she sees good and not from his mind. To women, it is totally different.

Coming from your latest article.. Yes for sure, money changes people, forget about locked character by poverty, some people , money makes them more gentle while others it makes them wild.. It just how people have seen the world and the kind of world they lived in before becoming rich. Look at davido, even with all his money he still act like he use to even after many years, but he became more bold and fearless, thats change.

I saw a quote somewhere once. I can't remember who or how it was said, at the moment, but permit me to paraphrase. "There are two tragedies in life; one of it is when we get what we want and the other is when we do not!". Now, concerning your post, I subscribe to the fact that money does change people. I mean, it has become a veritable fact amongst so many. Consider the quote above, when a man who once doesn't have anything working for him, eventually, gets wealth and many riches, there'll be a change of mentality - it may be good and it may be bad. Meaning he can decide to do good or evil, with what he has. In any case, it becomes requisite that we do not succumb to being controlled by it.

Happy Weekend.

That's very correct. Even me, the little money I have has changed my mentality towards some things. I used to see people using costly phones as waste of resources...I don't mean all these iPhones though🤣. But with money and time, I saw that those phones with good qualities are worthy and ofcourse if the money is there, why not go for it

Yes! Money unlocks some hidden character of a person. I've seen people that don't like cheating because money is not there, infact I made friends with such People because they are my kind, but when they suddenly started seeing money, mehn the preaching changed to another direction. Lol. In a nutshell, money has power

I'd actually tell you that money has its own spirit, once you have money, people tend to make you Thier main focus so that they can tackle you on any mistake you make which makes it seem like such people are changing but most of the time money unmasks the real you as you have better options to weigh and probably forget your guys that you were struggling together

I agree on this sis, money didn't change the person, but they changed because their status in life was changed and they have the guts to show the other attitude they are not used to before. I have known a lot of this before but unfortunately, that is just temporary, and it didn't last long.

"That character was there, it has always been there. That attitude was there, it has always been there. But the poverty kept it hidden all along." I do agree with your statements. This character is already in that person and but money reveals his/her true colors. And any wonder why God doesn't bless many people with wealth...

That's why bill gates say " whenever you have money, one could forget about himself". This sudden change in virtue after acquiring material possessions is very common in our region. Over 70 percent of our leaders cake from humble beginnings but today, they have turned to something else

At some point money can indeed revealed a person's real personality. That's how powerful a money can be. In fact over the years it's been proven, as people usually forgot how they use to be one's they saw money and one's get the wealth that they've been wanting. It seems like they forgot that money can't buy everything that we truly need and that was the love, loyalty and respect.

I think that if you don't have a strong moral foundation to begin with and your humility isn't a genuine humility of spirit but rather a humility brought on by circumstance then you can be swayed by money. And so, I agree that money doesn't change you, it shows who you truly are.

Money change people very well even if it’s you. I could remember a new a read about saying a Nigerian political man collected the the presidential election form and after that, that’s when he decided to visit one Amala restaurant at the rural area. What does that mean? He wants people t vote for him so have money and go beast mode it further notice where people won’t see him.

Well, I beg to differ that money does not change people, because it does actually.

Change itself is when someone or something becomes different due to an act or process. So money does change people.

Though I understand where you are coming from, and what you intend to pass across, but I totally disagree with this excerpt from your article “money can't change people, it can only change your physical looks and other material things."

Money does change the whole being of a person, no matter how minute.

I certainly enjoyed reading your article and I am open to more dialogue on the said topic, should you wish to engage further.

Enjoy the rest of the day.

This is a massive contribution from you Sir. You're brilliantly correct.

Maybe it's just "we" seeing it from completely different perspectives. Honestly speaking, your words on change really got me there.

Based on my perspective, when a person is actually poor, he/she tend to be humble save some, but really indeed. Most poor people are humble even though and if it's not just in them to be one, but due to their present circumstances, they try in adapting to becoming more sober and vulnerable. When money suddenly steps in, it opens up those hidden part in them. The humbly sober people suddenly becomes something entirely different and that, happened because they accumulated wealth. If by any means, they loose what they have, they sober up once more (just like the man in the nonfictional story I included in the article).

Money brings out a bad character that was already there, but unseen due to the poverty factor.

Maybe they have main reason why they changed after they became rich. They want to feel others what they felt before that nobody cared for their scarcity. They have this attitude to show to them that they could be successful even without their neighbors. But still it is not good. And we can't blame them too.

Hmm, you're right Han... Some of them just want others to feel the same thing they felt or the same thing they passed through.

A Yoruba adage say "the true character of a man/woman comes out when he/her has money".
One of my friend complained to me recently about a guy who was very close to him back when the guy had nothing. He said those times, they were very close. But now that the guy has gotten some money (change), he doesn't even reply his message on WhatsApp anymore.

I believe that's the real character of the guy, money only pushed it out.

Ayo, you're right. The real character of a person comes out when he/she accumulates wealth.

They say the real character of a man comes out when they encounter money and power so if a person changes to worse, that only means that's how he was all along, he just expressed them when conditions become favorable.
