People have their own pets of their personal choice. Most people are petting animals or insects.
Although I find it weird for some people to pet a thing. Plants can be pets too because they have life and can be taken care of.
When we hear the word “pet”, we often think of a cat or dog. It is common to have these domestic animals as our pets. Some people love them so much that they treat them as a family member contrary to some who hate dogs or cats.
Having these types of animals at home means you have to devote responsibility to them. We can't just ask a dog from our friend to make it as a house guard or sometimes kick when we are not in the mood.
They have feelings too because they have a heart. We might not feel the affection they want to show to us but we can see it if they get along with their own kind.
Since I was a kid we have always had dogs and cats in our house. It seems my parents are also animal lovers. Aside from those domestic animals my mother would also take care of some chicken and pig for our consumption and sometimes mother would sell them.
I will share a story about our pet dog although it was a long time ago and I was five years old back then. I hope I can recall and tell the exact story my mother used to tell us.
As far as I can recall, our small nipa house was surrounded with trees, mostly coconut trees, wild tall bushes and bamboo. Neighboring houses were 300 to 500 meters away and kind of scary during the night because the place doesn’t have electricity. We only used a kerosene lamp.
Houses back then in the province, although made of wood, bamboo and nipa, has an underneath. I guess the reason for that design was to make a better circulation of fresh air. I’ll tell you it really is peaceful to sleep in houses made of nipa.
Our dog was tied in one of the house posts so he has full visibility of the surroundings underneath.
What was the clamor about?
One night with the moon was at its full brightness, our dog was uneasy. He was making a sound by scratching the bamboo flooring then he was murmuring as he was irritated by something or someone.
Mother was awakened by our dogs not so loud noise and she went near the window and looked to where the dog was facing. She saw a man hiding in a distant coconut tree. He was barefooted with his sleepers inserted at the back of his pants.
Our dog continued with his unusual act but it did not bark. Then mother wakes up father and tells him about the man outside.
Father then sneaks at the man between the short spaces of bamboo walling. He then thought of what could be the man’s intention. Was he a thief? If he was, we wouldn't have wealth. We cooked our food with fire wood. We eat only fish and veggies during the early days. So if he was a thief he could not get anything from us.
My parents were talking in silence and my mother told father that he should stay still. Because if the man reached the wall and tried to sneak in she would poke his eyes with a screwdriver. Father was holding his "bolo" and preparing for defense.
However before mother had tried to prevent father from attacking, he had quickly jumped through the six feet window. The man was surprised and ran as fast as he could. Our dog then started barking.
The chase began. The man runs faster. Father would hit every tree he had passed by with his "bolo" just to intimidate the man. But he has no plan of hurting him. Father also was shouting to make noise and that the neighbor would be awakened.
Mother cried out calling all the saints because she thought that father had already killed the man because of the chopping sound of a "bolo".
It appears that the man wasn’t able to find the way out so they just made round and round the houses. Until finally he had escaped.
Father then went back to the house tired and exhausted. They just waited for dawn and father reported the incident to the barangay officials in the morning.
It appears that the man was just from a distant neighbor. The barangay officials had found out who he was and invited him for investigation. When the man showed up father had confirmed that it was him because he had not changed his shirt yet.
The man was then set free because there was no incident whatsoever. Only disturbances in the still of the night.
So this is just one story about our pet dog who happens to have the instinct of being a talented dog even if we did not train him.
I hope you like the story somehow. This is my participation in Writing prompt #10 which is about Pets.

Trivia: The title is jumbled words so that I would come up with a unique keyword. It is actually "False Alarm".
Ang cute ni Ampon 😊 naiinis ako sa mga nanakit ng mga hayop lalo sa dogs. Pero buti talaga andoon yung aso niyo nung bata kayo. Sarap ipakagat sa aso yung mga ganyang manloloob.
