No social media for 1 month
“A technology that was supposed to be helping people is now destroying them. A technology created to worsen productivity and mental problems.”
"Social media" is a computer-based technology that allows individuals to communicate ideas, opinions, and information via virtual networks and communities, according to Investopedia. Users of social media can share content such as personal information, documents, films, and images in real time via the internet.
Because of social media, we can connect with people across the planet. No matter far you are, as long as you have internet, you can talk to almost anyone. Aside from communication, it's also a home for entertainment. Current trends, short skits, memes, and even games are available for daily consumption.
Social media is a cheap form of technology that allows anyone to have communication and entertainment. This is maybe one of the reasons why Filipinos are obsessed with it. According to one study conducted by Digital Report 2022, the Philippines was the second most active country on social media.
Filipinos aged 16 to 64 spent an average of 4 hours and 6 minutes per day on social media in the previous 12 months. That’s a lot compared to the global average of 2 hours and 27 minutes.
Despite the advantages, there’s also a downside to too much usage of social media; unproductiveness, and worsened mental health to name a few. Some individuals stay too entertained with the things they see on their screen resulting in being stagnant and ignoring more important things. There are also people whose reality has already been altered as a result of what they see on social media. They believe that what they see is really the reality but the truth is not.
I deactivated my Facebook account and deleted its app last 2 days ago because I noticed that my productivity and concentration are greatly affected by this application. I also deleted my Tiktok app and planning to also delete my Instagram. I intendedly to leave my Twitter so I will still be updated on crypto happenings.
So far, I am having a hard time preventing the urge to install and use them again. Sometimes, I found myself unconsciously scrolling on my home screen to find the two apps I removed. It may take time to finally get accustomed to this new setup.
This is not the first time I’ve done this. Last year June 2021, after our graduation, I deactivated all of my social media accounts. This is my way to temporarily disconnect myself from people and focus on my own mental health.
Here are the things I noticed after getting rid of my social media.
I started to find other healthy things to prevent myself from getting bored.
At that time I became a ‘plantito’, a term called for those male individuals who begin to be addicted on taking care of plants. My first plants are succulents I bought at the mall. I also purchased soil designed specifically for these plants. However, I realized that being a plantito was an expensive hobby, so I gradually stop it. Di tayo mayaman, mars hahaha
Aside from being a plantito, I started to focus on writing. Since I was bored doing nothing, writing was one of the hobbies I thought will keep me distracted. These are my golden months here on readcash. I was able to publish every day, interact with several users, and accumulate 1 Bitcoin Cash. This is also the time when I explored crypto; I tried trading, bought shitcoins, and learned more about decentralized finance.
This is also the time when I became active in working out/exercising. Every day, consistently, I will work my muscles out, and take 30 minutes to 1 hour of biking.
I started to have a good and better sleep.
Aside from getting inclined toward healthy habits, I started to sleep and wake up early. Having no distractions and lesser blue light that disrupts the circadian rhythm, I am able to have a good and better sleep. This has given me a better mood and energy during the day.
I can prove how getting a break from social media can change your life. Imagine for just a short period of time, I am able to realize how this technology has affected me.
This is what I am trying to achieve again. I will try to get rid of my social media for 1 month and let’s see what will happen.
Did you try deactivating your account for one whole 1 month? If not, what’s stopping you?

Social Media detox? Why not if it is helpful. Minsan sobrang time consuming talaga ang pag scroll and it is soooo addicting. Might as well do that in the future one step at a time langs muna.
