The Correlation Between Happiness and Success

Most of the movies we have watched that showcase rags-to-riches success stories have protagonists who are either too serious or have a relentless, come-what-may-and-I-will-face-it attitude. Well, grit and determination are important ingredients to success. But some of these movies are implying that success is a boring route, and happy people are mere side characters.

While we can all agree that success brings happiness, we can also take into account that happiness can be an ingredient to success. Here's why:

Happy people are people magnets, so it is easy for them to expand their networks

They are easy to deal with and get along with, and they carry with them an attitude that makes them very likable. Given a chance, we don't want to transact with a grumpy business partner, right?

Happy people resolve conflicts effectively.

They don't usually harbor resentments so they want to deal with the issue head-on. They do their best to make sure that relationships are intact, and everybody is happy like them.

Happy people tend to be more creative and productive.

They don't waste their time thinking about things that slow them down. They work with ease and a positive attitude. They are fun to work with! They exude productivity and creativity because their outlook sustains a healthy working environment.

Happy people are more confident with their skills.

They don't bother thinking about what others have to say about them. They just do what they love to do and their confidence leads them to success. Sometimes when we think about the opinion of others, it causes us to shrink, but cheerful people are confident with what they are capable of.

Happy people are motivated.

They are not easily defeated and are not quitters. They know what they are fighting for and they will fight for their source of happiness. They are not easily affected by setbacks because they have ample reasons to work towards success.

Question is, how can we develop an attitude of cheerfulness, especially during this pandemic? Here are some suggestions:

  • Upbeat music helps! Listen to your favorite music that imbibes a cheerful mood and sing to it or dance to it! Music brings wonders, and you should experience it yourself.

  • Talk to positive people. Surround yourself with positive people! If you are always hanging around with complainers, judgmental people, the tendency is you'll join them in complaining and judging, and you will end up more ungrateful. But when you surround yourself with people who see the silver lining in the gray skies, you're doing yourself a favor.

  • Enjoy simple pleasures. Eat ice cream. Savor the taste of chocolate. Dip yourself in a hot spring. Enjoy life's simple pleasures. Life is hard, don't make it harder by withholding simple joys to yourself. Once in a while, treat yourself. Promise, you'll be glad when you do that.

  • A gratitude journal does wonders. List down the things that you are thankful for. Sometimes, our busy schedules make us overlook the many blessing that comes to us. But when we become intentionally mindful of it, we'll realize that we have a lot of things to be grateful for.

  • Help others. From time to time, do some volunteer work. Help people. Even if it as simple as assisting an elderly cross the street or sending some help to charities or food pantries, take part in making someone's life a bit easier. It's not that you'll be glad that others are less fortunate than you, but you'll be glad because you'll know that with the things you have, you can still make a difference.

Success is not just about reaching the pinnacle of whatever you're aiming for. It is more than that. A truly successful person is someone who knows how to relate to people and how he uses his influence to make others happy, just as he is happy.
