Advantages of Being Proactive

Merriam-Webster defines being proactive as "acting in anticipation of future problems, needs, or changes". I have learned about this because my boss keeps on telling me to be more anticipative about what might happen next, to have foresight. Normally, I tend to be reactive. I act based on how things turn out. I just respond. This is the opposite of being proactive.

Proactive people are constantly on the move, looking at the future and trying to make things happen. They engage actively, not observing passively. Being proactive has many advantages not just in the workplace but also in daily life. But what are these advantages?

Proactive people are rarely caught by surprise

Having foresight is an important skill of a proactive person. He knows how to anticipate problems and events. He understands how things work, and recognizes things based on patterns, graphs, and past practices. He predicts objectively and informatively. Hence, when his predictions happen, he is not caught by surprise. He stays calm and composed, able to think objectively and act accordingly.

Proactive people prevent problems or their potential effects

Proactive people foresee potential problems and obstacles before it turns into concrete roadblocks. Once a potential issue catches their attention, they do their best to address the issue head-on. They do everything to make sure that everything will function as intended to be. While some people might simply look back on hindsight and just sigh in disbelief how they failed to notice the red flags, proactive people act before things even blow up out of proportion.

Proactive people are geared for the future

Proactive people are natural planners. Instead of thinking about "here and now", they are one step ahead of others and think about tomorrow. They anticipate long-term. They bring the future into the present. It is wise to have proactive people on your team because they know how to prepare well for the future. Think of Joseph the Dreamer who prepared Egypt for the 7 years of drought by saving more than enough food during the 7 years of harvest. Proactive people ensure tomorrow's victory by preparing today.

Proactive people are part of the solution

Proactive people are involved in making sure things are going on smoothly, at least. They are valuable members of decision-making bodies because they share insights that might not be thought of by others. They give instructions, they equip people. They use their skills in making solutions and not just reacting to what already transpired. They do better than crying over spilled milk by preventing the glass from spilling in the first place.

Proactive people take action

Proactive people are not passive observers, they are active doers. They are decisive and are willing to work NOW and not wait for tomorrow. Procrastination is not an option. They are dependable and are accountable. They know how to take careful, thoughtful plans and not just react impulsively to their environments.

Being proactive is rewarding personally and organizationally. Do you know anyone who is naturally proactive? Commend them! And if you want to develop the skill of being one, you will do yourself and your organization a favor.
