Coca-cola

Good evening dear virtual friends, how are you tonight? The other day came when I somehow have neither the will nor the desire to write, nowhere a single topic to come to my head that I would write about. I'm sitting at my laptop, drinking coffee and juice ... While I was drinking juice, an idea came to me, so why not write a nice article about Coca-Cola that I'm just drinking? :)

r. John S. Pemberton 133 years ago created a beverage he didn’t even know would change the world and become the most popular drink ever. Caramel-colored juice was originally sold "by the glass" at Jacob's Pharmacy in Atlanta. And what is the secret ingredient of Coca-Cola?

The drink quickly attracted customers, and in 1894 it began to be bottled and distributed. When it was released, Coca-Cola contained both cocaine and caffeine. Cocaine was obtained from coca leaves, and caffeine from cola walnuts, a plant whose fruit is rich in caffeine.

Since these words start with C and K in English, Coca-Cola got its name from them. However, they changed the letter K to C for marketing reasons. The name Coca-Cola is credited to Frank M. Robinson, a partner of John S. Pemberton.

The original copy of the formula was kept for 86 years in the main safe of the SunTrust bank in Atlanta. In December 2011, the original secret formula was moved to a new safe that is on display at the Coca Cola World Museum in Atlanta, but in a metal box so no one can see it.

It is also the first time since 1925 that the box came out of the safe. For a long time, there were rumors that only two people in the world knew the full and real recipe of Coca Cola, however, the public doubted that it was also a part of the marketing myth.

And, is the formula really locked in the vault? Absolutely, writes Vintage News.

There are numerous obstacles in the way of potential thieves, and the first is certainly the vault. Although many tourists visit the Coca-Cola Museum every year, very few people can enter through the vault door. That vault is, indeed, equipped with the most modern technology that makes it impenetrable, and it is located in a complex of over 8,000 square meters across the famous "Baker" street.

In the museum, in addition to looking at the inaccessible vault, you can enjoy tasting various drinks from the Coca Cola factory, and as it includes a small bottling plant, tourists can take home the original packaging of Coke in a small glass bottle.

Have they ever removed coca leaves?

In Pembert's formula, Cola contains 142 grams of cocaine from coca leaves per gallon of syrup, and in 1891, Kandler reduced that amount to a tenth. A glass of Coca-Cola was estimated to contain nine milligrams of cocaine. It was removed from the composition in 1903, but not completely. After 1904, the factory began to use residues from the process of extracting cocaine from coca leaves, the so-called spent leaves.

Since then, coca-free coca leaf extract has been added to Coca-Cola. It is extracted from the leaves in the plant of the Stepan factory in New Jersey, which is also the only company in the USA authorized for that job.

When they changed the recipe, they received 1,500 calls a day

Coca-Cola has been fighting a battle for years with the new Cola, drinks similar to this one. In the early 80's, Pepsi started selling better in supermarkets. And in blind taste tests, consumers rated Pepsi better than Coca-Cola.

And that's why Coca-Cola decided to improve the taste. They dropped the old Coke and in the spring of 1985 released a new, improved version of the drink, called "New Coke". Old Coca-Cola was completely thrown out.

The reactions were terrible. People were furious, they wrote letters, protested, complained that their childhood memories were taken away, that they could not imagine life without a real Kola, the newspapers wrote about this phenomenon, and the new Kola was ridiculed.

A total of 400,000 calls and letters arrived at the company's headquarters in Atlanta, and they received 1,500 calls a day. They even hired a psychiatrist to listen to customer calls and convey their professional opinion to directors. He stated that some people talked about the withdrawal of Kola as the death of a close family member.

Leading people were in a complete dilemma. People who preferred to choose a new Cola on "blind" tests before launch, and when asked if they would rather drink it or the old Coke, most of them said that they would, but that they would need time to get used to it.

Customers were divided. Sales of Nova Kola gradually grew, but there were buyers who completely gave up on Kola, they did not want to buy her, the new Kola, or Pepsi.

Directors feared how the international market would react. The best marketing move ever at the same time, a huge number of people, especially in the southern United States, demanded the return of the old formula. There were people who bought large stocks of Cola from Europe, those who bought the remaining stocks in their local stores, but also those who founded the organization "Old Cola Drinkers".

Only three months after the launch of Nova Kola, on July 11, they returned the old formula to sale. People were thrilled. By the end of the year, the car was selling better than both Nova Kola and Pepsi, and only six months later it was selling twice as well as Pepsi and it never overtook it again.

Many later questioned whether Coca-Cola did this on purpose as a marketing ploy, but the company always said that they did not, that it was simply a mistake.

Either way, that mistake turned out to be the best and worst business move ever and is usually mentioned in colleges as an example of not having to play around with a well-established brand.
