March 26

I could not believe it. It's already a week have passed since we went to that small island paradise west of Culasi, Antique. Yes, it was a small island but its beauty is comparable to that of Boracay Island.

Greetings once again, wonderful readers. It's summer here in the Philippines and we are now feeling its scorching heat. Last week--- yeah, it's been a week already --- we went to a couple of places in Antique to cool off. The first place that we went to was Malumpati Cold Spring.

(Read: Our First Adventure to Antique- Malumpati Cold Spring )

That was on March 18, Friday. And exactly 7 days ago (at the time of writing), we went to a small Island called Mararison Island. That's what I am going to share with you here.

 The Night Before

We slept in my brother-in-law's residence in Culasi, Antique. We had some drinks after dinner. There was a wide-open space in front of their house. My wife's cousin planned to set up tents on that lot, so I brought my own tent for my kids. But my wife did not allow them to sleep in the tent. They had a campfire and the kids enjoyed roasting marshmallows.

I went to bed around 11.

Preparing for the trip

I woke up before five in the morning as usual. One of our hosts was already up as well and preparing the food we need for the island trip. I had my coffee and enjoyed the early morning view. The moon was almost full or had just started to wane that morning. It was a wonderful sight, especially for those who lived mostly in a city. The air was fresh. Moreover, you will not hear any rumbling of engines from passing vehicles because there were none at that time.

While waiting for our ride.

We walked towards the beach which was just a few hundred meters from where we stayed. The view there was wonderful. We waited for our ride at the beach.

 Boat Ride

While on the way to the island, I was amazed I still have a full signal for my mobile services. The boat trip took us only about half an hour. We enjoyed the view while on the boat.

The boat ride to the Island

 Mararison Island

Mararison Island or also known as Malilison Island was named after one of the siblings in their local folklore. "Malalison" in our dialect means "to argue often" or "always arguing". One of the offspring of Madya-as, the name of the tallest mountain in the island of Panay and Kanlaon --- the name of a volcano in Negros Island.

The part of Mararison facing the main island is covered with sand. The water is so clear that you can see the bottom even if the water is neck-deep. But I think, you can still see the bottom even if it is about six or eight feet deep.

Mararison Island

There are lots of cottages, but the island was closed to tourists. We were able to go there because our host has some relatives there. If it were not, we could have done some hiking towards the hill on the other side of the island. There was a small community on the island. They have a functioning multipurpose hall.

We got there around seven in the morning but the summer sun was already glaring. It was a hot day. A perfect day to spend some time in the water.

It's a paradise

Spear Fishing.

No, I wasn't able to do some spearfishing. However, that's how the residents of the island earn their living. The island was surrounded by rich marine life. They spearfish in the deeper part of the water. The way I see it, it's a better method than net fishing. Though they don't catch in volumes. With spearfishing, they catch only the adult fish and leave the young ones alone. This way, the sea will continue to provide for them. Sometimes, they catch some large squids and even some octopuses.

 Better Than Boracay?

Boracay Island is known to have one of the best beaches in the world. However, when corporate-owned resorts were allowed to operate in the island, its natural beauty was replaced by concrete structures and the island became too commercialized.

Although Boracay was recently rehabilitated to reduce the pollution caused by these commercial resorts, it is no longer as pristine as it was.

On the other hand, Mararison Island still flexes its natural beauty. Nature and humans coexist in harmony. I hope the local government will keep the island's natural beauty. I hope they don't turn it into a commercial tourist spot like Boracay.

 Live an abundant life.

 Thanks for reading.

Been to Boracay 3x. ..first kong punta dun eh madumi pa at magulo pa mga around 2013 pa yun but nung bumalik ako for the 2nd and 3rd time (2017&2019) malayong malayo nung una dahil super linis at organize na ang Bora.
