The media exert a subtle but powerful impact on society. They should be required to consult all the sources involved in an event and not just one of them. They have never had as much power as they do now. They are present not only in public life, but also penetrate people's intimacy with ease. In fact, it can be said that they have a decisive influence on the formation of individual and collective consciousness. The essential function of the media has to do precisely with informing and presenting different points of view on the same event. They were created to enable people to be informed and to construct a vision of reality that would better guide their behavior.
Moreover, the media are also capable of creating memories, and they do so by the most expeditious means: by revising history and altering its narrative. Certain events are deliberately referred to as if they had originated a month ago, when in fact they are the result of a long, and usually contradictory, chain of events. Certain uncomfortable aspects of the past are also eliminated by not referring to them when talking about yesterday. Everything that happened is mentioned, except that which is unpresentable or which offers the keys to know who is who or what is what. Well, various atrocities are sublimated or embellished in order to maintain the narrative of good guys and bad guys that so many spectators like to receive. It happens within regions, within countries and worldwide.
In the same vein, a good part of the media are also big business, which is wonderful, at least in principle. The problem comes when many of them have a direct link with political and economic powers. That leads them to seek favors, promote ideologies or avoid enmities. It also causes them to lose their independence. No media can be totally objective. What they can and must do is guarantee a minimum of impartiality and respect for their audience. Positive communication is that which expresses ideas clearly, but without affecting or damaging the sensitivities of others, or their own. Positive communication must be done freely, without pressure and honestly.
The media have played a preponderant role in the development of human beings and societies. Its main objective has been to offer itself as a channel through which people communicate or obtain information. On the one hand, interpersonal means of communication have allowed people to communicate with each other across distances. Over the years and thanks to technological developments, the media have been able to bring people from different parts of the world into contact, not only by voice but also by image. Individuals and communities access the different mass media to have informative material that describes, explains and analyzes data and events of different types at a local or global level.
In conclusion, these media have played an important role in the social sphere. Its main objective has been to offer itself as a channel through which people communicate or obtain information.
