Feel the pain: Talk about it

Yesterday's post was kind of gooseflesh. The post might be inappropriate for some readers and forgive me if I failed to have warnings.

This post is quite related to yesterday but don’t worry you will no longer see pictures of anything unpleasant. It will not happen again.

Today I will just share some experiences when I went to the hospital last Thursday. I have not been to hospitals for a couple of years. I think the last one was when we rushed my pop in-law to a public hospital sometime in 2018 due to an asthma attack.

Before I went directly to the hospital, I first visited a clinic to have my foot checked. I wanted my foot to undergo an x-ray because I was certain that half of the needle was still inside.

To make it short, I was advised by the physician to go to a surgeon to have it removed. The doctor told me that I should go to a public hospital because of affordable services. She gave me a recommendation letter then my wife and I went to the hospital after lunch.

We arrived at the public hospital at one 1PM. I was assisted by some nurses and they did the standard procedure of admitting a patient. They checked my body temperature, blood pressure and heart rate which seems all normal.

The nurse was kind of curious about what had happened so I told her the whole story. Then I was brought to the hospital bed through a wheelchair and waited for the doctor to arrive.

After half an hour, the nurse came in and told me that the Doctor is still in a meeting and said I should just wait.

Two hours have passed and the Doctor is still not around. I just waited patiently and tried not to get bored, but my right foot is not getting any better. While waiting for the Doctor, a nurse was monitoring my condition which I felt I was being domesticated.

Finally after three hours of waiting while browsing through my phone and taking some selfies, the Surgeon came. I wasn’t able to recognize his face because of his face mask on. He looks like he is in his early 30’s. He asks me a few questions, then he checks and examines the condition of my foot. He gently pressed the swollen part a couple of times then he explained to me that he will not do the procedure because he can’t feel the needle inside.

He then left after telling me to wait for the prescription. After a few more minutes the nurse came and gave me the piece of paper with the doctor's handwriting that only they can understand.

After paying the bill which was around $10, we dropped by the pharmacy to buy the antibiotics and went home.

So here’s the thing. After hearing from the Doctor that the needle will not be removed on that day, I felt like I wanted to raise my adrenaline. I screamed inside like “Heck! That was just a needle! How does it differ from extracting a bullet inside a chest or stomach?”

The needle is just under the skin and it is visible because I can see the portion of the skin is protruding. You know, like embossed skin.

Can somebody explain to me why!

We waited for three hours while me enduring the pain then it was just like nothing, seriously? Who would have wanted to insert a needle on the sole of his foot? I did not want this to happen, it was an accident, actually it was already an emergency.

I am already aware of the activities of some government employees in PH that’s why I was expecting some delays with how they work. But knowing that my condition was kind of neglected, I was really devastated again by the system. I should have gone to a private hospital instead.

I don’t want to get mad at the Doctor because he has done his part in explaining to me almost perfectly. However that scenario again adds a minus point from me to government services.

I don't want to speak in general because there also also government employees who deserves recognition.

I hope this post don't sound like a rant because the government has been suffering from critics left and right. I don’t want to add more. Even if I would post grievances here nothing will happen.

Anyway I think that needle was stupid enough that it didn’t noticed my foot was there. Forgive me needle, I broke you.

I have nothing against the government. I am just tired of the system that keeps rotting.

If you happen to be a government employee and are reading this feel free to give your opinion. If you are a nurse or working at a hospital or have a family member who works in a hospital feel free to enlighten me. All comments are highly appreciated.

Thanks for reading. Ciao!

Same feelings. I think I have talked about it too in ome of my articles. When father experienced an excruciating pain in his abdomen, he wasn't properly admitted for two days. Gosh, it must be so hard for dad, and mom too.. Some hospitals didn't accept them, and when one did, they even have to wait for two effin' days. Whew. sighs

Maybe you should get treatment from any private clinic if you can afford because every government employee doctor has his own private clinic ( at least here in my country they do that) and they gibe you more care in their private clinic.

Sometimes, ranting about poor service or being neglected in a public facility is necessary just to call the attention of people running them. While we understand how overwhelming the pandemic has been for majority of healthcare professionals, in places that do not handle COVID cases, attending to patients will help correct the misimpression that medical professionals only choose who they want to treat. Compassion and humanity are imperative in these times.

Yes, Sad but true. That's okay, they have their own reason for whatever it is that we do not know. But you know sometimes doing the right thing ain't doing the right thing.

Thanks for your opinion on this. Keep safe.

This is really serious case, Kuya Lars. I really hope you can go to other hospital and have it check even if you already had anti tetanus shots. Again with my what if's..what if the needle travels inside? 😭 I like it when you can still joke about the needle. Hehe. Ang kulit lang. Basta seryoso ako Kuya Lars. Lipat ka na ibang ospital. Kung ayaw pa din eh lipat ulit. Punta na ng St. Lukes BGC. Hahahaha.

Yes sabi nga nila haha, they said it could possibly travel and reach the heart. I think it'll take years before it can reach my heart and if that happens, I think I am already 90 then (laughs).

Sabi nga nila malayo sa bituka hehe.. pero putik tumama kahapon sa upuan, grabe mag kaihi ako sa sakit haha.

Wag nman St. Lukes haha. Thanks anyway Jo, keep safe.

Oh my word!! After reading this I went back looking for the previous post you mentioned, I work as a volunteer in some of the hospitals / clinics in South Africa and one of the main reasons we wouldn't do something immediately is if we were overwhelmed by critical cases. I had a look at the x-ray and must admit I'm extremely confused at why they didn't attend to it then and there. Even in one of our smaller clinics that lacks a proper operating theatre, one of the senior doctors would have done SOMETHING more than send you home with meds. I hope you make a speedy recovery!

I guess it's more better to live in Africa if that is the case. Anyway I'm good, just can't walk straight. Thanks.

This is truly emotional. We can choose to hate, while we can also choose to do the right thing whenever we can at our own level and capability.

Thanks for your empathy. But you know sometimes doing the right thing ain't doing the right thing. Keep safe.

I don't know what you mean exactly, but what I do know is that doing the right thing is not an easy thing.
