Never Stop Learning
Not an Hindrance
Yesterday, while I was helping my youngest son in answering his printed worksheets in Filipino subject, their lesson for this week is about understanding the main idea of a story by the way, there was this short story that they needed to comprehend. The story was about the girl who graduated cumlaude. The girl’s name was Mary Ann Rosuman, born and raised in Ilocos Sur. People were happy about her achievements not only because of her intelligence but the dedication she gave in her studies despite being different to everyone. Her disability didn’t stopped her to be on top of her class. With the help of the people around her, she was able to finish her college education with flying honors. Quite inspiring right?
Free Education
I’ve heard a lot of inspiring stories like this in the past. Stories of successful people who been into different situation in life but was able to overcome the hardest challenges and well now enjoying the fruits of their labor. Yesterday I watched my favourite noontime show on tv. In one of their segments “Bawal Judgemental”. Just a quick information about this famous gameshow on tv for non Filipinos “Bawal Judgemental” is a game where players are tasked with the responsibility of identifying the correct choices among a group of people with distinctive characteristics, past experiences, and emotional revelations. credit here
So going back to the show yesterday, what really catch my attention while watching the show was the girl who was a part of choices, The girl’s name was Bel, she was the first one to be interviewed, and was revealed to be a an scholar of the show since high school up until she graduated in college. She gave a short message to the show expressing how grateful she was for giving her the chance to be educated. She also mentioned that she wouldn’t be what she is or whom she is right now because of the free scholarship she got from the show. Truly she is an inspiration to everyone because she didn’t waste the opportunity given to her, instead she studied a lot harder in order to reached what she is now.
The Message
Not everyone are lucky enough to continue their education up until college. I know a lot of people specially in my province, where they were contented with secondary education and starts working at a very young age to helped their families. While some started making their own family right after high school, one of the reason they stopped getting higher education because they needed to focused on their kids.
Being poor should not be an excused to continue our education. If people like Maryann despite being a person with disability can strive with her study, I am sure you can too. Bel on the other hand got a free education because of scholarship. There were many foundations and institutions that offered free scholarship for those who deserves it. If you didn’t get a slot for these scholarships I know you can still find a way to get a degree. As they say “if there’s a will there is definitely a way”.
Education knows no Age
Another reason why some didn’t want to finish their studies because of their age. They thought they were old enough to be in school. That’s a very wrong perspective I must say. I also went to college late due to financial problem. I am 3 to 4 years ahead from most of my classmates, it didn’t bother me at all, because my goal is to finished college no matter what and also few of my classmates were much older than me too. They gave me inspiration to go on despite the many challenges.
Closing Thoughts
In this generation, where we have an easy access to everything, I hope the younger ones never stopped learning even though they are facing a lot of difficulties in online learning. It’s true though, that face to face has a great advantage than having an online classes. But in these uncertain times it’s better to attend online classes and learned something than learning nothing at all.
