"The less you read, the more damage is done by what you read" - Miguel De Unamuno

It is curious to think that today many people hate reading, for them seeing a book is like showing a Vampire a wooden cross, because of this, we see with concern the large number of individuals who find it difficult to understand a text, and we are not talking about scientific texts, or with a technical language, we are talking about a simple reading, but even so, they fail to understand the message that is in it. We cannot read for the sake of reading, it is not about taking a book and finish it in one day, the idea of reading is that we begin to develop our reading comprehension, which we undoubtedly need in our daily lives, no matter what we do. But you should ask yourselves.

¿What is Reading Comprehension?

Reading comprehension is a linguistic skill based on the complete interpretation of a written text. Basically, it is the ability to understand what you read. It is not enough to know the meaning of each of the words that are part of the text, but it is necessary to have a global understanding of what you are reading. - @blog.educalive.com

Based on its definition, first, we have to sit down and think, what reading we want to read, and why, when we have the answers, we have to look for how we are going to read, either physically or digitally, after having done these steps, we must seek peace, it is not pleasant to read, with plenty of noise, however, some people like to read listening to some music because they understand the text better, no doubt we all remember that in school, we were always sent to read, that teacher or teacher asked us: "What does that paragraph or text?" Nowadays maybe we are no longer in school, maybe it is not mandatory to read, and maybe you ask yourself, what good is that to me. Very well, let's suppose that you get a job in an office, and they send you to make a presentation, however, your level of reading comprehension is serious, you do not understand many words, and you begin to improvise, you begin not to have coherence in what you want to express, and the more you read the little you wrote, the more you feel confused. And so many more examples for nothing, it is not only about knowing how to read, dear readers, it is about knowing how to understand what we are reading, to know what is the meaning of any text, to feel prepared to face any situation, both in the workplace, educational and social, in recent times, our lives have changed completely, with the arrival of the "Internet and Smartphone". How many times have you sent a message telling one of your friends or relatives about an event, and they are left blank, but in order not to inquire more about what happened to you and to understand the text, they prefer to respond with monosyllables, to make it seem that they understood.

¿Does Reading Comprehension have Levels?

The answer is Yes, and after you read this, you will know at which level you are, as Reading Comprehension is a complex subject, our mind has to go through different levels, to be able to decipher each text, to be able to understand each reading, and thus to be able to develop such an important skill, as it is to Understand. The levels are:

  • Literal Level - The Reader who develops this level, or reaches this level, can understand the text, to know the meaning of most of the words that are mentioned in it, and has to be able to interpret each sentence present, in short, if you are at this level, you will ask yourself a simple question, What does this text say.

  • Interferential Level - When we reach this level, we should be able to follow the text and the reading, combining it with the lived experiences, and understanding, what the author wants to say, even if he does not do it explicitly, we have to be able to give a value to that text, to understand it, and take it to our daily life, and thus have another perspective of the author.

-Source - pixabay.com-
  • Critical Level - Already reaching the Literal and Interferential Level, our reading comprehension has to be well developed, however, when we reach the Critical Level, our limitations have to go, because we must be able to make a judgment, based on our previous knowledge, for example, if we read a book History, about Ancient Greece, and we have a basic knowledge about that Civilization, we have to be able to understand what the text says, what the author wants to express with what he tells us, take it to our daily experiences or experiences, For example, the Greeks lived 100 years mostly because of their good health and their passion for exercise, that should make us think that today, there are a huge number of people with health problems related to not doing those physical activities, and there we will be joining what we read, what they tell us, with the present, and somehow or another way we will be understanding better, and the reading will not be boring, then we can only make a judgment or a reflection of what we understood in that text, and what is the position of the author.

As you can see, Reading Comprehension is not a topic to take lightly, you have to work on it, there are even pages where you can get practical exercises, and improve any weakness you think you have, it is important to work on this, there is a lot of misinformation today, we see the misuse given to social networks, We see people who write for the sake of writing, some incoherence that is frightening, we see people who start the most absurd discussions and all for not knowing how to understand what is being shared on this platform, or simply see people who comment for the sake of commenting, and no matter how hard they try they can not understand what it says there, and sometimes it is believed that this is normal, however, it is not so.

Learning and reading comprehension is still a process for me. I think it is so for everyone for learning does not end. There are new things every day that one must need to learn. We can do it through reading.

I think most, if not all, here in read try to read as many as they can or write as many as they can. We try to maximize the time that we have.

I have always claimed that learning from reading is the most valuable ability I have, and it is the most valuable ability to forward to one's children. Then I talk about qualified reading comprehension.

It is true what you say that some (many) people don't understand what they read, but it is not always the problem is their reading comprehension - it can also be badly written text. Some writers lack clarity; they over-complicate their explanations and just cannot express a thought clearly.

It is correct my good friend, not always the problem is of the reader, but of those writers who write without having clear their ideas, without having clear what message they want to leave, however, it is always good to read a little of everything, to practice our reading comprehension, to know at what level we are, because in the future this can be a great advantage or disadvantage, thanks for stopping by.

Thank you for pointing this out to our attention. Reading and understanding what we read is really needed, like for instance here in read cash. I am not sure as to which category I fall though :)

In my case, I read what gets my attention and comment when I understood the context. I have encountered rare articles though, that no matter how many times I read them, I simply cannot connect with what the writer is trying to say. When I read articles like that, I kept them open on the browser's tab and try to read them again within the day, but when I simply cannot grasp what it is all about, I just leave without any comment.

I'm glad you liked the article beautiful friend, many times when that happens and the problem is not the reader, but the writer who did not know how to highlight or capture their ideas or messages, like you, I always seek to read texts that leave me teaching, that allows me to give good comment, but I've run into an article that bore me and leave me with a headache because they did not know how to fit it.

That may be the case, we need to know how to fit the phrases and paragraphs so the idea of what we're trying to let out will be easily grasped by fellow readers. I'm working on it myself :D

When I was in Secondary School, I find it hard to read or even have interest in comprehension unless such reading is interesting and the questions posed out are easy and simple to answer. Reading isn't only for reading sake. One must be able to understand every texts and be able to interpret in their own understanding to give them the hint on what they are reading and be able to justify their point in reading to relate with life's Experience.

Exactly my dear friend, we not only need to read, but we also need to understand, to progress in life, to achieve what we want, greetings.

We need to understand whatever we read perfectly whenever we are reading. Scanning or Skimming works for some people though but to really get the mind of the writer we should read with understanding.

I’m 100% agreed. I know a lot of people who tried to give their opinions based on specific topic but their opinions are totally different from what the author sent or what they have read. I read comments most of the time and I noticed that people don’t really understand or get what the author’s message for his readers. I questioned myself, “did they really read the text or they did read it but never understood the message”. You can immediately tell that they have low reading comprehensions and they need to practice it.

I have example, the lyrics of the song “STAY” it’s a new trend song this day. They just focused on the Chorus “I do the same thing, I told you that I never would. I told you I change even when I know I never could” of course the chorus of the song will gonna make you think that “This GUY is TOXIC” but when you try to understand the whole song lyrics, the message of it was different. This guy has an issue, let’s just say smoking or drinking problems. If he lost her he can’t change himself because he can only find the best version of himself when he’s around her, that is why he need her to stay.

You gave a great example my dear friend, unfortunately, the new generations have a serious problem of reading comprehension, because they want to read as if the world were ending, but do not take the time to understand that message, that text, and/or idea, thanks for stopping by.

i agree with you, there are people who are just scanning what they are reading and because of that they do not get the full gist of what the writer is saying. in English Language Test there are so many who failed in the reading comprehension part when it should be the easiest part, and that's made me feel sad.

Correct my beautiful friend, unfortunately, you know how to read, but do not know how to understand, and this is vital in life, which is why we see so many problems that arise from the misinterpretations that are given to many texts, greetings.
