Why with the use of smart technology we become stupider and demented

Тhe generally observed state of our intelligence and memory is getting worse. The most common power outage and internet signals cause strong waves of panic attacks. Common sense disappears in a second and makes us totally executed in space in time. The essence of the whole story is that technology facilitates many activities, which has the hidden consequence of "atrophy" of our brain.

Take for example the appearance of a calculator. Before him, people calculated much better, using pencil and paper. After the advent of the calculator, many are unable to perform basic mathematical operations such as addition or multiplication without it. It is similar with memorized phone numbers. Once upon a time, people knew by heart dozens of phone numbers, and today one or two. There is a new teaching philosophy in that direction, which believes that young people should not remember data, but only know where to look for them, if they ever need them.

It is known that human muscles adapt to the activities for which we use them. If we often use them for some repetitive activities that require strength, the muscles grow - hypertrophied. If we do not use them for a long time, they atrophy. In this way, our muscular system adapts to our activities.

The human brain functions in a very similar way: those actions that we repeat lead to the multiplication of the number of connections (synapses) between nerve cells in the nerve pathways that are used for a given activity. When we do not repeat this action for a long time, the number of synapses decreases. In other words, the brain behaves like a muscle: if we use it, neurons connect better, and if we don't use it, the number of connections decreases. This ability of the brain to save in adapting to requirements is called neuroplasticity.

There are numerous innate programs in the brain of a small child, but also a large number of nerve cells that have yet to build interconnections and establish nerve pathways. Which nerve pathways in the brain will be built depends on external stimulation: what is stimulated is built and maintained, and what is not, is not built and reduced. As the brain of a baby or small child is most stimulated by parents, its organization is not the result of nature, but it is the "social brain".

With the advancement of technology and the consequent entry of various contents through digital screens into the world of children, the question arose as to how prolonged exposure to digital contents affects the development of children's brains.

Children's brains develop quite differently under the influence of digital technology than in children who had normal development with the help of physical activity and learning how to function in the natural environment, relying on their physical abilities such as walking, running, overcoming obstacles, etc.

Digital terror pays tribute. Increased attention disorders, speech therapy defects, physical incapacity in the most ordinary activities, and of course the problem with supersensitivity and disorientation in the social environment. They are easily diagnosed just after expressing a panic attack when they encounter the most common problems, such as ordinary group children's play or not coping with school materials. In the presentation, the lecturers do not recognize a large number of expressions, numbers, formulas… It is difficult to maintain attention while reading longer sentences. Not to mention the texts, they totally lose touch with the essence. Speech delays were also noticed, which mostly took parents to a completely different extreme and suspected deafness. However, it is only a matter of lack of attention and non-recognition of sound signals, that is. non-recognition of the parent's voice in the mass of digitized sounds to which he is accustomed by simulating all day spending on television screens watching cartoons or worse, spending time watching various clips on mobile phones or playing games, playing music.

A much greater boon for your child is writing, drawing, sculpting in clay and plasticine figures and objects that surround them and getting to know the environment. Be creative and show them games from your childhood. Hide phones from them and help them to be physically and mentally developed normally. Do not allow your child to end up as a person with special needs from a normally born child. Fight it. It will be returned to you a hundredfold in the future.

Much less damage is the impact of digital technology on the normally developed brain than growth and development with digital technological terror. Scientifically proven.

I agree with this article partially, I do think that the message of raising children with limited access to technology is a good thing. However, I do disagree that technology itself is the issue.

About the neuroplasticity part, wouldn't it be better for us to use more of our brains on things that technology cannot do, instead of wasting our brains' resources on stuff technology can do? There's no reason to think that we will suddenly lose technology, so adapting to use it is fine in my opinion.

Also, the education system (in the U.S., at least) is not keeping up with the current times. We should teach them the dangers of spending all their time on recreational activities, such as playing video games and videos, so they can limit themselves. We should also be teaching them things they want to learn, instead of wasting it on things that they could just look up if needed.

Also also, I haven't actually looked for any evidence about this so I could be completely wrong, but I think the "we as a species are becoming more dumb" is just an illusion caused by being able to see more people at once (due to the Internet). Again, could be wrong about that though. (It's also a bit early to talk about that since technology is so new)

Anyways, interesting article. There's a good discussion to be had here.

Welcome washing-correct-difficult-shirt, And I agree with your views. Here is proof that not everything is ideal if we leave our children to digital technology, for example, Bill Gates restricted and forbade the youngest child to use mobile phones and computers. The same one who takes millions of our dollars a year from those same things. Realistically, we are surrounded to the maximum in technologies, but the problem is that they are not used in moderation. The problem now is the appearance of quarantine and reduced physical activity increases the use of mobile phones, visits to social networks, etc. I am trying to find a solution on how to divert children's attention from the Internet to reading books, painting, writing ...

Everything is getting smarter in the current age. Just as there are some positive aspects, there are also some negative aspects. The positive or negative aspects depend on how we use this technology. Really enjoyed reading your article. Keep it up

Thank you very much for your attention. I tried to point out the shortcomings of that smart age, even though it is currently at the peak of its glory, not everything is so great.

New technology is there to help us in many segments. By using it, we get used to the things we can get at any time and suppress the need to learn something. A pure example of a calculator, the math teacher made us know the squares up to the number 25, and today it is no longer done in school because for God's sake they will calculate the phone ...

Everything that is not used decays over time, no matter how much we call "smart technology" devices, we are stupid next to them

These are all excellent points in the comments. I think there is a difference personally between taking ownership of critical thinking skills that comes into play. Lots of us drive cars but don't know how they work if we need to fix something. the same goes with technology, which leaves us vulnerable to others who are critically thinking

Yes, I did not limit myself to the fact that it was noticed, but not generally 100% present. The problem is that the number of people with these problems is increasing day by day and these problems will be related to the use of digital technology.

Welcome potta, Yes, that's the story. Our brain if we do not use it loses its function just like an athlete if it does not run and train every day it slowly loses its strength and speed.

with the new technology, people, especially children, have stopped hanging out with each other, now there are no more games that used to be played outside, now there are only virtual friends, and virtual games, so when you see someone sitting in a cafe instead of talking to each other everyone is staring at their phones and writing everything, that's new technology

One of the exam questions from neurology is the influence of TV screens, tablets, mobile phones on the work of the brain and really that constant sensation of images and their speed of change affects the work of the brain in everyone, not only children and another detail that struck me was that exposure even causes epileptic seizures in individuals.

Welcome Phiny, I wrote the article based on personal experiences that I gained first at the Faculty of Special Education and Rehabilitation, and also in working with children at school. Of course, while working with children, you monitor and collect data related to the problems of following classical classes, so it is easy to diagnose the problem by observing and waiting for feedback. If the child does not understand the simplest terms, his health is checked, whether he is asleep, rested, whether he is a victim of violent behavior of adults or other children ... many factors affect the perception in classical teaching. If you are a parent, you can see for yourself the negative impact of new technologies on your child. Children start talking at the age of two. If your child shows you with his hands that he is hungry, thirsty and is more than two years old ... an alarm.

Yes, this is a harsh reality. Smart devices make our lives easier, we lose our daily habits and become lazy. Excessive use of technology, especially in children, puts their brains in a zombie mod.

That's right, Nesho. We seniors somehow manage, but such a mode leaves lifelong consequences on children.

Yes, you are right, otherwise nowadays there are more and more children with a problem in speech and comprehension. The other day, a lady on fb in a group asks, hey women, a child is 3 years old, which tablet should I buy her, which is the best for games and videos, one woman still says that this is smart for children to learn everything. they think it’s not harmful, passionate.

I sound like a broken record on Facebook, I keep repeating that it is best not to give such things to small children at least until the age of 10. Call me "baba serom" but I know what problems excessive exposure of young children to digital technologies causes. From hearing problems, speech development to epileptic seizures.

The human body is a miracle and the neurological system is literally a tangle of tiny veins that carry brain information to organs and extremities and back. However, all these sensations continue even after the limb amputation, so it happens that you feel your phone vibrate next to your leg, which no longer exists because the doctors removed it. or to hurt ... itch ... it's called a phantom phenomenon in medicine I don't know if you meant those vibrations

I don't remember anything anymore. But when we go to a village where there is no signal for mobile phones, we experience a severe shock and we need at least 10 days to adjust and overcome hopelessness and helplessness because of just that one option.

Thanks to the internet for these activities. I don't see a way for all of us here to gather in one place without him. But I wanted to emphasize parents who, instead of spending time with their children walking and talking, take mobile phones in their hands because of Facebook, and allow children to be in the virtual world and then wonder and take them to the doctor, speech therapists, etc. because they do not know how to talk and see a lot of problems.
