Mannerisms, Can't Stop It
Time flies so fast. What do you know? It feels like I was just waking up but now it's already way past my bedtime and it's another late night. You know what that means, another freewriting session done by me, myself, and I.
There's no one to talk to at the moment so thankfully, I can talk to you in peace. No disturbance and no distractions. Although I have a time limit. I can only stay here and converse while I'm still awake, which is I'm guessing not too long now. I can feel my eyes closing longer and longer every time I blink.
I'm blinking quite a lot lately. I think I'm developing this mannerism due to my eyeglasses. When I take off my eyeglasses, which is often, my eyes squint 😆 as if trying to adjust to the blurred image that my brain produces. So I tend to do that now whenever my glasses are off. I also blink a lot when my glasses are on because I keep adjusting it and when I do, I tend to blink.
Now, I feel like blinking or winking uncontrollably because my eyes get itchy and a little dry. I hate having mannerisms.
Since I was a kid, I can easily pick up something that can readily turn to a mannerism.
Oh, before I get into any more details, mannerisms are actions or movements that people do often and would seem unnecessary. People do these actions almost involuntarily because they're doing it semi-consciously. They are different from involuntary muscle movements and reflexes though.
I remember when I was in the first grade, I had this mannerism that I do with my index finger and my nose. Nope. I'm not picking my nose. I used the backside of my index finger and rub it across my face against my nostrils. You would often see that maneuver in shows or Animes where a character would do that thing to express self-pride when he has done something that he thinks is awesome.
But I don't do it to brag. It's just my brain always thinks that the bottom of my nose is itchy, and then I'd use my index finger to subtly scratch it. But it became a repetitive action that I do it several times in a span of five minutes. And more so when I am speaking.
We presented a play then and I acted as one of our heroes, Andres Bonifacio. And whenever I deliver a big line like "punitin ang mga sedula (tear up the tax certificates)", I would rub my nose with the boney part of my index finger.
My parents called out that bit after the play. And then I grew conscious about it. I eventually shook the mannerism away by trying to psych myself that my nose isn't itchy and trying to resist the urge to scratch it.
Over time, I developed and gotten over some more mannerisms. And now, my latest is the thing that I do with my eyes. I should really work to shake it off too because it seriously looks weird. It looks like my face is twitching uncontrollably and I'm losing my poise. Lol. I would just like to think that I do have that.
Great Night!
So, what about you? Do you think you have any mannerisms now? Think back, think hard, have you ever had one in the past? How were you able to get rid of it?
Thank you for joining me for another freewriting session. I wanted to go on and talk more but I feel like my eyes are getting real heavy and they are sensing that I will have an early morning tomorrow. I need to get up at least about 4:30 in the morning because I will travel north. I'll get to visit another town tomorrow, hopefully I can bring you back more stories and more photos.
But for now, let me kiss you good-night and may you have a sweet dream. The wetter the better, as they say.
Until we read again...
Cheers!!!

My mannerism is that I tend to scratch my stomach and my back even if it is not itchy haha. My mother doesn't like it.
