Luka Dončić was born on February 28, 1999 in Ljubljana. His love for basketball started to show very early on. The ball was also the first on his wish list for birthday gifts from his first steps. Even though he had many, he always found one he didn’t have yet.
Initially, as a small child, Luka gave the opportunity to other sports. At the Miran Jarc Elementary School he attended, his gym teacher quickly discovered the sporting potential of young Luka. So he wasn’t missing out on any cross country or school marathon. His running activities were the first to fill the display case with medals in his children's room in Ljubljana.
Luka also fell in love with martial arts. Judo was the one that made him come home proudly many times with a medal around his neck.
In the first grade of elementary school, he began to show off his basketball talent at the basketball club. At the same time, Luka, who was always full of energy, also trained football, handball, tennis and swimming. For a while, Luka persevered and attended all the trainings and matches. Because it eventually took him too much time with school obligations, he decided to dedicate himself only to basketball. He stood out the most in it at that time.
He showed faster and more visible progress than his peers from training to training at the Union Olimpija basketball school, which he started attending in 2006.
His coach therefore quickly sent him to the senior team and from there to the selection. Because of his height and talent, at the age of nine he also stood out in the group where the boys were three to four years older. He was always the one who made the match end in favor of their team.
Luka Dončić was followed by scouts of many European giants for a long time, and the most enthusiastic about his arrival were at the royal club from Madrid, which contacted the player and his parents through his representative. He was first invited to represent their colors in the cup tournament, and then an agreement was reached on his final departure to Real.In September 2012, barely 13-year-old Luka Dončić left his homeland and went to Madrid. Luka lived in a boarding school with other young Real players. He attended an international school where lectures were given in English and Spanish, so it was imperative that he learn Spanish on a daily basis, which he knew quickly. He made his debut in the first Spanish league on April 30, 2015, when in the match against Unicaja, at the age of 16 years 2 months and 2 days, he became the youngest player in the history of Real, who played for the royal club, and the third youngest, who played in the league. He entered the stats with a three-pointer, which he hit just 16 seconds after entering the game. In the first season of 2015-2016 in the Endesa League, Luka played in 31 games and averaged 4.9 points, 2.8 rebounds and two assists per game in 14 minutes, becoming the Spanish champion. In the final, they beat Barcelona 3-1 in victories. He wrote history as the youngest finalist, at the age of 17 years and 115 days.
At the tender age of eighteen, Luka greatly helped the Slovenian national team to the greatest success in the history of Slovenian team sports, to the title of European champions in 2017, and was also selected in the top five of Eurobasket. In the 2016-2017 season, he was named the MVP of the Euroleague round four times, and he also won the title of the most promising player in the strongest European club competition. The following season he became the MVP of the Euroleague and the MVP of the final tournament of this competition, and Real Madrid led to the title of champion.
After the dream season 2017-2018, Luka applied for the NBA draft and became the 12th Slovenian basketball player to participate in the selection. On June 21, 2018, he was selected third by the Atlanta Hawks at the Barclays Center in Brooklyn. Just moments before the selection, Atlanta and Dallas agreed to swap players, with Luke going to Dallas as the third selection and Trae Young’s fifth selection to Atlanta.Dončić became the highest selected Slovenian in the history of the NBA draft.
