"How in the world did you get out of there?" Kristoff Cobb asked Naomi Plumb.
Naomi gets asked this question a lot of times. Naomi used to be under the leading of the known boss terror in Sector 541 -Boss Fin Franks. News around the floor is that no one gets to transfer out to another department from under the boss. There are only two ways of getting out from under the leading of Boss Fin Franks:
you resign
you get booted out - sayonara!
Boss Fin Franks is the perfect winepress. He will really squeeze out your juices. He may sound ruthless a lot of times but his subordinates will no doubt attest that he is a great boss. You may hear an earful both for an honest mistake and a real horrendous mistake but he would always end conversations with an uplifting speech. Supposedly to make you feel better, he follows the sandwich method in giving criticisms. He goes:
9- grain wheat Bread 1 :
you have shown excellent adjustment since you came from another team and got trained. You got along pretty well with your colleagues and they seem to be comfortable and they do trust your directions.
Filling (this is the fun part)
Genoa Salami and chicken of denial of a reimbursement request because the value was "too expensive"
cheese slice of tardiness you've accumulated for the week. He does not give a damn about grace period from the company handbook. Retort with the overtime you've given and you'll have...
two slices of tomatoes and pickles of being read through your signed contract stating that you are expected to render overtime because of your own fault (to relay it easier).
roasted jalapeno of a recall of how you stuttered during the meeting with the higher ups, how disorganized it appeared, and how many "umms" you have inserted between your words during your presentation.
ranch and mustard sauce of many other bloopers you may have done
Extra bacon of that three careless instances you sent out an email without a proper attachment and had to recall the message and then resend again with the wrong attachment and recalled again you get the picture.
9- grain wheat Bread 2 :
despite all that he would say he sees potential in you and that you will be a great lead.
As most sandwiches, it is normally the filling that makes the sandwiches really remarkable. While a real sandwich will be mouthwatering, with this serving of a sandwich you will be out of his room with your eyes watery from pent-up frustration.
That is Boss Fin Franks but he is also known for not leaving his underlings to be devoured, bullied and looked down on by other bosses. Some instances, he saved the team from getting the worst rate. He knows how to save his own. His underlings learn that from him - they are still his team and he will not let them get burned. He has knowledge in how to deal and communicate with client and he picks up escalations gracefully. He has that certain charm. Ah, charm. You can have all the brain and the certificates in the world but charm is the grease that makes it all work out smoothly. Used right, you'd be flicking a wand and things will go to your favor. This is in the context of professional work.

Now, Kristoff Cobb is from another department. He and Naomi knew each other from a training before when Naomi was still with Boss Fin Franks' team. Kristoff knows about Boss Fin Franks aside from the stories that go around, his friend, Brandi Alfaro, used to be part of that team and she chose to resign after three months of getting served the sandwich. He witnessed how her friend turn from vibrant happy to downright shrunk with self-pity. Brandi Alfaro, prior to joining the Sector and being put under Boss Fin Franks was a top resource of another company. She was the ace until she worked for Boss Fin Franks.
Naomi started telling her story. For some time, Boss Fin allowed her to work with a start-up department who wants to know their process. She got a heads up by Boss Fin to be watchful if the start-up department head would start giving hints of getting her to be part of the start-up department instead.
True enough, the start-up department head did give hints. Naomi did not like the start-up department as it does not give her the confidence that it will thrive for long. After a heated argument with the start-up department head, Naomi relayed the incident to Boss Fin and she simply requested to be transferred for a while to another department instead. She justified the move and Boss Fin arranged the transfer. Her request was just in time when the other department (the one she will be transferring to) head was asking for possible resource. Had she not aired her desire to be transferred, her boss would think that she is still a-ok where she is.
Sheer luck? You see, sometimes we get too afraid to assert our wants and needs because of the known reputation of some people. But unless we speak up, we will be stuck where we would not want to be stuck for too long. Communication is key. Naomi did something no one has tried before : simply requesting to be transferred.
No one is a mind reader. Or if there is one they could read it wrong haha.
Characters in the story are not real. Names were provided by the hound. Thank you sis!

Communication is indeed the key in everything. I love the jalapeño on the sandwich and those bacon. I was drooling while I was reading each ingredients. 😅
