Two Songs, Same Feeling, Different Memory.
Topic: Name two songs or pieces of music that have meant a great deal to you, defined moments in your life, made you feel great happiness or great sorrow when you hear them take you back to a special moment. Explain why in each case. You can link the YouTube videos if you like.
That was the question that was asked on Hive in the Weekend Community by Galenkp. I shared my view and did justice to it and felt I should do the same here as well. It's a touchy subject but I love laying things bare. You never can tell what people can pick up from it and then apply to make informed decisions. We are all learning from each other after all.
I feel deeply and that's why words matter a lot to me. I don't just listen to any song but that song must have rich lyrics and the beat must compliment it too. I am a huge fan of words with deep meaning and lyrics. It's better to learn about the story behind every song as it would help us to appreciate that song better. When we know the story behind the song, we can know how it fits into our lives which would make it have that sentimental value.
I have so many songs that hold this special place in my heart but for the sake of the topic, I would restrict it to just two. May was a month of emotions for me both the good and the bad... it was a mixed feeling due to my late dad and sister and also this June... would be my mum's 13th remembrance. I guess you will understand why I chose these songs.
A lot of people don't talk about their pains and hurts which is why they sometimes self destruct. This is my therapy session...discussing it and posting about it is therapeutic for me as I get them out of my system, it makes me feel better. The pain eases but the memory stays the same. It's not a show to gather sympathy but this is what it does to me; gives me the strength to move on because, from the comment sections alone, I learn about those who have gone through worse.
There is no day I listen to this song that I don't have goosebumps. Whenever I listen to it, I struggle to hold back tears and that's me being honest. It's everything about the song for me; how the artist delivered it, the story behind it and the emotions involved and even the message he tried to pass across. I can remember listening to this song a lot after my dad passed away and I was watching my mum feeling helpless, sad and empty. It was never the same again and that's what this song makes me relate to. Anytime I listen to the song I remember how she felt at that moment.
Title of Song: "Dance With My Father"
Artist: Luther Vandross.

I still listened to this song during dad's 16th-year remembrance on the 26th of May. I can never outgrow that song because it reminds me of him a lot. When I travelled to Ibadan over the weekend and I went to dad's house. I entered his old room and touched the picture frames on the wall. This was the song that still came to my mind because I want to have one final dance with him and tell him a lot of stories. I would play a song that would never end so I can have him closer and longer.
This song is pure emotion and it's my connection to him because I always replay in my head how the whole thing went, how my mother felt, how I screamed and how the news was broken to me when I was close to my final year in 2006. I remembered how I felt as I took unusual permission to leave school, how the Chaplain called me back and my best friend at that time called me and followed me home. I was about to write my 300 Level exams (3rd year) in 3 weeks when he passed away. It affected my concentration a bit and that's why this song holds so much meaning to me. This song takes me back to many years of memories and emotions.
The second song that holds me in this same feeling and draws me back to memory lane would be this song that was sung for Aaliyah when she had that plane crash. I've never been a fan of Puff Diddy songs but this one is a masterclass. He nailed this one and delivered it so well. By now you would know I'm never a fan of too much loud and fast songs but I have a special place for Avril Lavigne.
Title of Song: "I'll Be Missing You"
Artist: Puff Daddy feat. Faith Evans and 112.

I have two instances in this case and the first would be in honour of my late sister. She died 16th of May, 1998. The song was released in 1997 after Aaliyah's plane crash and the moment we lost my sister, this song suddenly became my favourite and my way of connecting with her. "Every step I take and every move I make, every single day and every time I pray, I will be missing you" that is part of the lyrics and that part always hit me differently. It made me remember so many things I should have done with her that I was deprived of. You know you learn a lot about females when you have an elder sister you are so close to. Ever wondered why most of my friends are females? Wonder no more...what I lacked is what I am making up for.
I love that song because my sister and I were very close. We shared the same room, laughed together and played together. She was the most peaceful human you can ever come across. No offence but I've never seen anyone as calm as her even to date. She's not hard to miss and I miss her.
The second aspect of this song selection is for mum. We lost mum in 2009 and this song is my connection to both my sister and my mother...speaking of using one stone to take down two birds. I was more of a daddy's boy because I felt I still have time to connect with my mum but I only had 3 years of connection with her when dad passed away and I wish I had more. That is a huge regret that I still carry to date. If I was given a chance or a magic wand to bring one person back from the dead, shockingly, it would be my mum because I want to make up for those lost times. When I sing this song, I picture her face, her last breath and the struggles when she whispered to me. I picture the two of them at once with this song.
These two songs are important to me and I wouldn't trade them for anything else in the world... I mean anything. There are some memories that money cannot buy...this is one of them.
Thank you for your time.
My pen doesn't bleed, it speaks. I am love's chemical content in human form and that's why I advise people to take a dose of "Olawalium" daily. 🙈

Dance with the father seems very emotional song I also hear Mere Papa Song that was sing by the two sister for their disease father. It reminds me of my deceased father who left us alone in this world
