It has been always been my goal to have financial freedom. I know how it feels to have nothing when you don't have an inkling of when and where you will get your next meal. Growing up, I have seen the sacrifices of my parents just to make sure that at least, we'll have the basic needs for sustenance. Hence I etched on my mind that someday, aside from repaying my parents for what they did to me, I'll make sure that my future children will be able to enjoy things I wasn't able to enjoy. I want to achieve financial freedom.
Many of us desire to have a taste of this freedom. I have visited a lot of forums and Facebook groups on the subject, attended financial seminars, read financial management books, and followed some reliable financial gurus. But financial freedom to me still seems a lofty concept. The main reason I attribute this to is lack of privilege.
When we talk about privilege, we often talk about the power and advantage that only a small group of people have, usually because of their wealth or their high social class.
I have watched a video about social privilege and I can easily relate to its message. Some people are born with a silver spoon in their mouth. Some are born in a healthy home and positive environment. Some, however, have to struggle with the fact that life will always require them to work double time.
I grew up trying to understand why things have to be a little bit harder compared to some of my classmates and friends. Opportunities do not come, I have to chase after them. I cannot always afford to slack, and failure is not an option. But I realized that trying to change my privilege will just frustrate me in the long run, so I'd rather change my perspective instead.
Rather than sulk and think of the fortunate ones as enemies, why not consider them as inspiration to do better and learn from their positive ways?
Though I consider myself inferior compared to the ones I look up to, when I try to look behind for sure there would be some who would rather switch places with me. The question is, what can I do to help them? How can I use my privilege to make their lives easier?
Social structures and class struggles will always be around. The goal is not to get even or compete with those at the top. The goal is to live life to the fullest. The truest sense of financial freedom is not just having all that you need, but whether you're totally happy with what you possess. There's nothing wrong with trying to amass wealth. But will it be everything? It should not be the end in itself.
Life is challenging, and it always will be. The rich have their own set of problems, and so are the middle class and the poor. There will always be first-world problems, as much as third-world problems. But one thing that makes us equal is the ability and countless opportunities to influence and make an impact on the lives of people around us. Perhaps that's my consolation. As I journey towards financial freedom, I want to make a difference in the lives of privileged and less-than-privileged people around me.
