Today is my off from work, and the plan is just to stay home, listen to some good music and relax, scribble my thoughts and write something to post in here. Woefully, there was an unannounced power interruption - no electricity and no internet. What a life! But nevertheless this day turned out to be a productive one, as I tend on the plants, clean the porch and cook a hearty lunch for the family my mind is also typing bits and pieces of the simple joys in life.
Here it goes:
Before your senior years and/ or a debilitating disease or infirmities overtakes you, and before you sit on your porch alone with a hectic craving for power, pleasure, fun, money and gratification of self.
As you become less and less able to get around, before a a painful knee robs you to walk, think of the joys of walking down the park or along a running stream, enjoying nature - the beautiful color of the leaves, the fruitful bliss we got from the trees and the warmth of the sun at its best. The satisfaction of just simply tending your garden and smelling the earth in front of you, taking time to design a simple joy in life that will soon passed by you.
As your hearing slowly leaves you, think of the joys of a loved one’s voice, the music and the chirping of the birds, the laughter of children and friends. The swish of the wind that brings rain, and even the near- silence of the afternoon sun brings a joy of quiet life.
As your eyesight dims, think of the joys of reading, be it a book, or a magazine, or some article of simple or deep thought. How awesome it is to see the evening sky, catching the orange glow of the sunset. To see the fields of green grass and the blooming color of flowers across the valley and hills, beyond the blue and waving seas and ocean providing simple joys in life.
As your diet, for health’s sake, becomes more meager, think of the joy in eating plain food in the family table. The fresh eggs in the morning, a heartfelt sharing with your neighbor, the meat and vegetable meal to close the day with your loved one’s gathered around. The great abundance of food our land provides.
We have experienced countless simple joys in life, but we have taken it for granted. How many times we complain in tending our gardens or a rain that ruined our day? How many times do we decline each family outing and gatherings? Soon in your old age and/ or disability, you will think and live contentedly in the memories of them and counting further the joy of more rest and prayer.
Finally, the greatest joy of all, the trusting faith in all-knowing Creator, a God of love, who always watches you as you take time on these simple joys in life.
