Malamang taas kilay ang karamihan nang mabasa ang title ng article kong ito.
Being Lazy is natural!. Admit it or not, all of us will have this day or time that we don't want to do anything at all.
Our mind doesn't function at all and all we want is to lay in bed and relax all we want.
That's why there are what we are so called "Lazy Sunday, Lazy Day, Lazy Bed, and so on."
I guess most of us here knows about Bruno Mars "The Lazy Song" which describes how does being lazy feels. Have a listen to it.
I thought of writing this article about benefits of laziness because I suddenly remember my former subordinate who is good in automation, good in excel formulas and macros.
When I gave compliment to one of his works, he replied back to me and said:
"Tamad kasi ako ate Khing kaya mahilig akong gumawa ng paraan para mas dumali ang trabaho"
And then I suddenly bumped into the below statements quoted by Robert A. Heinlein - an American science fiction author, aeronautical engineer, and naval officer.
“Progress isn’t made by early risers. It’s made by lazy men trying to find easier ways to do something.”
While to some, "laziness" describes person's negative traits, there's also advantages and positive outcome or result of becoming lazy.
Laziness can lead a person to think of Smart Solutions, in other word, automations.
Lazy people always love to do a shortcut. They always find ways to complete a task easily without exerting more effort to it than what a normal people do.
My former subordinate is my perfect example of this. Since he don't want to do a repetitive work, he tend to think of automating them instead of manually performing the checks or manually doing the task in a daily basis.
When you are required to do a repetitive tasks in a daily basis, you will lose your interest and thus resulted into "you" being too lazy to do it over and over again right? Eventually, you'll going to treat it as a "no brainer task".
Let's say for example, opening and closing the door every time someone's about to leave and about to enter. Why do this if you can actually automate it? There are motion sensors available in the market which can be used to detect if someone's approaching the door. It saves time and effort.
In my line of work, automation is one of our main objective or goal - automating stuffs that are repetitive which eventually reduces effort or manpower.
Due to automations, company saves a lot. It is actually one of the efficient way of cost reduction.
Laziness keep a person away from being exhausted
You might have already heard this statement "Di bale nang tamad, di naman pagod".
Well, this is just a joke for others but if we'll just think of it, it makes sense right?
Since lazy person tend to take regular break, they will have enough time to recharge their mind and body.
They will have plenty of time to restore their energy. Actually they will not felt tired at call cause they spend more time on taking break than their job - "Mas madami pa ang pahinga kesa gawa". Only, the downside is, they are too less productive. But again - "Hindi naman pagod".
Laziness can help manage stress
Why? If you are away from the thing that contributes to your stress (for example your work), it help you cope with your stress right?
I once became an I.T developer during my Accenture days. I've been a mainframe developer (Cobol - DB2). As an IT developer, we used to create/update a program or number of programs depending on the business requirements.
For example, if the company introduced a new option to the user interface, let's say a "Register button", we, the IT programmers or developers do the coding and instructs the system on what shall it do as soon as the user clicks the "Register button".
I do noticed most of my colleagues are taking a break whenever they're already stressed or stuck with their codes.
And hence, one day, my seatmate asked my other colleague to go for a break cause he's already stuck and stressed cause his code is not working and keep on failing.
So I asked him:
"Nakakatulong ba ang yosi para maisip mo yung kulang na syntax sa code mo?"
He then answered:
"Nakakarefresh kasi ng utak ate Khing pag nagbibreak, lalo na kapag nagyoyosi".
Which is somehow true and I have proven it myself. Whenever I felt stressed and exhausted with my code, I also came to a habit of taking a break from time to time but of course, I do not smoke (I am not a smoker at all).
I just do some strolling around Venice Piazza in Mckinley Hill (Grand Canal is still under construction that time) whenever I get exhausted or stressed with my code. Venice is just few steps away from our office way back when I was working in Accenture.
How about You?
Do you think being lazy is also beneficial?
Aside from those that I mentioned above, what do you think are other benefits or advantages of laziness? Come and share it with us :).
