"Shining Caves" are located in the north of New Zealand, and for scientists they represent a unique phenomenon that they have been dealing with for more than a hundred years.
These caves were a closely guarded secret, until one of the Maori chiefs showed them to explorer Fred Melke in 1887. After that, "Shining Caves" became a tourist attraction, because they have a unique type of flies that found refuge in this underground passage.
Although the Waitom region is full of caves, the insect Aracnocampa luminosa found its habitat in only two caves. Stagnant air, temperature and lack of drafts are the conditions that result in each individual producing adhesive tapes.
Arachnocampa luminosa is a species found exclusively in New Zealand. From these lavas of these insects, there are fibers on which there are drops of sticky liquid with which they are attached to the vault of the cave. When it gets completely dark, the fibers "burn" and attract other insects, but they also attract tourists who admire them.
The Cave of Luminous Worms is part of the Waitom Cave Complex, which also includes Ruakuri, Arnaui and Gardens Gacht Cave. In Maori, vai means water, and tomo a hole. A million years ago, the place where the caves are today was covered with water. Corals, shells, fish skeletons and small marine organisms formed a limestone layer more than 200 meters thick.
When the water receded and the limestone dried up, numerous caves began to form which are today, among other things, home to these blooming worms.
The interior of these caves is reminiscent of the starry sky, because the color they reflect is electric blue. However, if something attacks them, the larvae of the fly emit snow-white light. The mixture of these two colors makes a wonderful sight that has been one of the main tourist attractions in this region for decades.
The caves are also a paradise for speleologists, as the cave system is more than two million years old and is one of the main tourist attractions in New Zealand. Some of the caves are not open to tourists and are visited only by speleologists and fans of extreme sports.

Creatures, however, are not worms at all, to be precise. They are actually small beetles (the name is due to the awkward Latin translation of Arachnocampa luminosa). Experts estimate that the caves are about 30 million years old, but they were not discovered until 1940. Before that, they were considered a fictional place that appeared only in Maori mythology.
