What is jealousy? Jealousy is a feeling of anger, hostility and resentment caused by the belief that someone else has something that you do not. If someone receives something you have always wanted, it can feel like the world has turned against you. The recipient seems lucky and you may even feel like they do not deserve what has been given to them.
However, there are no lucky people in life. Everyone has had to work for everything they have achieved. Even if someone has not worked for it, they may have inherited it from their parents. Nobody deserves anything just because they are good looking or charming.
Jealousy is closely linked to envy and comes from an attitude of disappointment and bitterness. Envious people do not want to see anyone else enjoy success. They would rather see those around them fail so they can revel in the failure by comparison.
The opposite of jealousy is gratitude and we should all strive to be more grateful for what we have. We need to look around and realize how lucky we are to have a roof over our heads, food on the table and people around us who love us unconditionally.
People are often averse to complimenting others because they think it makes them less significant. However, that is not the case. You should not be jealous of others, instead celebrate them. You do not have to be friends with everyone, but you can wish them success. It will make them feel good and build goodwill.
Creating a culture of celebrating others is one of the keys to being happy and content. It has been proven to improve productivity and worldviews. So much so that the philosopher Aristotle suggested that praising others makes us more attractive as well.
If you find it hard to compliment others on their achievements, that is a sign of jealousy. The most miserable people in life are filled with jealousy. It eats away at them and steals their joy. They always think of the things somebody else has that they want, which in turn leads to resentment and strife. A remedy is to start celebrating other people’s successes with them and make a point of complimenting them.
