Abortion Law: Right or wrong?

The justification of abortion has been a lifelong debate just like creation itself. So many countries have been battling this for a long time, some government approves it and legalize it only for another to come in and negate the existing law.

So many schools of thought have proposed a child limit rule as the solution to Nigeria’s ever-growing population but that can’t work with abortion still viewed as an illegal act. Moreover, this is a country where religion, morals, culture, and Pride play a big role in our day-to-day activities. Will Abortion Law work in Nigeria? That’s a direct question with no specific answer. On one hand, it will help a lot in solving so many problems but it can create a national issue. Something as minute as that can lead to a nationwide protest by some religion or tribe, hence the careful approach the government has been applying.

Reasons why Abortion law is in place in some countries

Unwanted pregnancy

This might sound hilarious, and the first thing that might come to your mind after seeing “Unwanted pregnancy” is “Do they abort wanted pregnancy?”. Funny but “Yes some situations warrant aborting a pregnancy even though it is wanted”.

Some pregnancies are a result of rape, incest, pre-marital sex and more. All these are things that society shuns and they are unexpected. The woman might not be ready for such, most times the man fails to take responsibility which leaves the woman with two options. Raise the kid yourself or abort it. They feel it’s better to abort the child than subject her to a life of pain. Some can decide to give the child up for adoption after birth but that is a tough decision to take.

Health issues

The health of the woman needs to be taken seriously. If the pregnancy put the woman’s life or health at risk, abortion is the ideal thing to do. Or if it is suspected that the child might end up having a fetal impairment, abortion might be the best option.

This doesn’t happen to unmarried ladies alone, a married woman can be advised not to give birth again after several childbirth but by mistake get pregnant again. Many will say such women ought to make use of contraceptives, condoms or other child prevention methods.

Without it, people resort to unsafe abortion

If the abortion law isn’t in place, people seek the wrong way of abortion which most times lead to the loss of life or womb. No matter the rule a country sets, people will still find their way around it. All over social media, we’ve seen cases of young girls using the wrong drugs to abort their pregnancy and some visiting quack doctors. Many die from this, some bleed for days, and some sustain long-lasting injuries and infections from this. If abortion is legal they won’t have to face this.

However, even in countries where abortion laws exist. There are laws guiding it, but this is also a problem. How do they validate the reason for the abortion?. Also, there is a maximum number of weeks that can be aborted. Anything above that spells danger.

It's the woman’s body and her choice.

The lady has the right to choose. It should be part of her fundamental human right. In fact, no man has the right to force a woman to keep a baby even if it is his. It's her body that will go through the pain for 9 months and the pain of delivery.

The reason why some countries disapprove abortion

Religion, moral and cultural reasons

This is just like the “Gay law”. so many countries are against it till now due to their moral and religious stand. Abortion is seen as a sin in some religions and cultures. If the government pass the abortion Law, the masses will show their displeasure in any way they can.

Fear of abuse

In a country like Nigeria, passing the abortion law might see a surge in the numbers of pre-marital sex. What is stopping many from indulging in it, is the fear of pregnancy and fear of abortion. But when a system is in place that approves abortion and there’s assurance that qualified doctors are available to carry out the abortion for them, they will throw caution to the wind and involved in unprotected sex without a second thought.

Conclusion

Whatever decision the government takes, one thing is certain- Not everyone will be happy about it. The opinions are divided. Some people want the abortion law while some are against it.

Abortion is never a good idea in the first place. Outside religion or anything, it is so wrong to take an innocent child's life. Putting abortion into law is encouraging killing. Our young people will misuse the opportunity.

As a person living in a religious country, abortion is viewed as an evil act. I respect the people who did abortion and it's their own freedom. It's just that when you live in my country, people will judge you for doing abortion because a life from the womb is sacred to us.

I would say if we are to look at it from the religious perspective, then yes it's wrong but my personal opinion is that it's neither wrong nor right, it depends on the situation in which it is used. Just like you said, some people end up with unwanted pregnancy like maybe from being raped, in that sought of situation I will agree that abortion is right

The truth is having a child in the current time is a big responsibility. So I feel like everyone should do what they can do but before you decide to have unprotected sex you should ask your self if you are ready for the repercussions.

There's no law that was ever made and everyone will be happy with it, in some cases, abortion might be a good choice, especially if the carrier isn't ready to look after the child yet, for my analysis, I realize that 16% of children born outside wed luck(I mean children abandoned because the parents weren’t ready for the responsibility and can’t take abortion because it’s a sin according to the religion they believe in) are successful, the remaining percent becomes the country nightmares

It’s really hard to know where I stand on this topic. The advantages are okay, but here in Nigeria how do you identify the real doctors from the quack? Youth should use protection if you know you want to have premarital sex. Girls need public awareness.

This is a very controversial topic. While both opposing sides have their points, I don't really agree with the whole thing. It equals murder to me and can only be justified when it poses a health risk.

I am in support of abortion law, as that would control the population and save a lot of people from unwanted pregnancy and marriage too. Like you said, it can be abused and that is just human nature TBH, we abuse privileges.

In as much as abortion is killing and my religion is against it, I'll rather prefer that than to bring up a child that'll be maltreated or go through untold hardship.
It's a personal thing . If it's abused, the person doing it will pay the price.

I have nothing against abortion that is if it is done right but what I fear is definitely the abuse that will follow cos this country of ours barely knows what limit is and people will treat abortion like they are taking paracetamol...
