On the run

Chidi hated his uncle who was now also his stepfather. Two years ago after the death of his father, tradition demanded that a man's brother should take care of his family by marrying his wife and assuming the role of a father to his nephews and nieces. Chidi never liked his uncle because he never liked his father when her was alive. As a matter of fact, rumors had been going round that his uncle had killed his father through a diabolical means after a quarrel over the land inherited by the two brothers from chidi's grandfather.

Chidi's uncle was a no-good. He didn't care one bit about chidi. In fact chidi had been out of school for months now due to the blantant refusal of his uncle to pay his schooll fees. Of course, an idle mind is a....... so, chidi was gradually becoming a naughty boy and each time he was reprimanded by his stepfather, he would feel more motivated to behave more foolishly. And whenever his mother supported his stepdad instead of her son, Chidi becomes angry and started resenting his mother too.

He didn't care anymore whatever they both said and thought about him. He had decided to live his life however he wanted to.

His stepfather on the other hand would always resist his bad behavior and would order his mother not to give chidi any food through out the day anytime he proves sturbborn.

Chidi thought that it was ridiculous for his stepfather to prevent him from eating in his own father's house. It was not as if he contributed any money for feeding o. It is always chidi's mom that supports the family with whatever she makes from selling her farm produce. Chidi's stepfather would spend all mornings and afternoons under a tree drinking kai-kai and playing cards with other drunkards whose wives also shoulder all the responsibilities of their respective families.

Chidi believed that such a man does not deserve to be respected. He made it his duty to continue to disobey and frustrate his stepfather in his father's house. His mother would always advise him to be good but chidi never listened. Instead, he was so angry that his mother had now become pregnant for such a "useless" man.

Sometimes when Chidi returns home at night after spending the whole day at the football field, his stepfatherr would creep into his room when he was fast asleep and begin to flog him on his bare back. Chidi would wake up immediately and try to run away only to find out that the door of his room was locked. He would be beaten by his stepfather for hours.

The last time his stepfather visited him at night, he was so bitter and sour that he left the village. He didn't return home for three days and this made his mother worried.

When he eventually came back, his stepfather still wouldn't let him be. He instructed his mom not to give him any food. But chidi did not care about food now. He had already eaten enough from wherever he was coming from.

Despite the fact that chidi didn't disobey his stepfather by entering the kitchen when no one watching, just like how he usually does. His stepfather still crept into his room that night to flog him again.

Now chidi couldn't take this anymore. He was so enraged that he snatched the cane and pushed the older man violently and he fell flat on his back. With all the anger and hate bottled up in him for a long time, he began to flog his stepfather.. He flogged him seriously.

Chidi was 19years old and his step father was almost 50, but the man looked a lot older and frail due to excessive consumption of alcohol. Chidi didn't hear when his mother was screaming at him to stop and he continue to beat the old man who was almost unconscious till the neighbors rushed into the room. It took four men to hold chidi and pull him away from his stepfather.
