Starlink is already in Ukraine: how to connect to the Internet from Ilon Musk

Due to the war with Russia in Ukraine, there may be internet outages and network access problems. That's why Ukraine asked SpaceX founder Elon Musk to provide access to Starlink satellite internet in Ukraine. The first stations are already in Kiev, Vinnitsa and Zhytomyr.

Starlink is a global satellite system for Internet access in hard-to-reach corners of the Earth. It operates via satellites deployed in orbit. This internet cannot be turned off or hacked. It provides a fast and uninterrupted connection.

Starlink arrived in Ukraine to manage critical infrastructure in wartime: power stations, military bases, industrial plants.

Ordinary users can also apply for an internet connection, but the processing of applications is slow. Most applications will be approved after the war is over, but some may be lucky now.

Note that connecting to Starlink is not free. The internet installation kit costs 500 USD and the monthly internet fee is 100 USD.

How to connect to Starlink

First, you need to leave a connection application form on the company's website. Applications are accepted on a first-come, first-served basis, and if you're lucky, the box will be mailed to you. The Starlink kit includes a Wi-Fi router, signal receiving terminal, cables and fixings.

Assemble the terminal by following the manufacturer's instructions. The antenna can simply be placed on the ground or hung from the roof. Once the antenna is secured, connect the cable to it and plug the power cord into an outlet. All system components are pre-set, you just need to plug in the cable.

Install the Starlink app on your mobile phone via Google Play or AppStore. In the app, select your home network name and password. Connecting to the satellites can take about 20 minutes. The average download speed is about 100 Mbps.

The program sets records in the Ukrainian segment of the App Store and Google Play despite the fact that satellite Internet service is not yet available to civilians.

Over the past two weeks, downloads of the Starlink app on the App Store and Google Play have more than tripled globally. In Ukraine, users have downloaded the product from official online stores about 98 thousand times.

On Sunday, March 13, the Starlink app set its own record for the number of downloads in one day - twenty-one thousand downloads in the App Store and Google Play, most of them from Ukrainian users. In addition, on that day the product took the first place in the Ukrainian App Store.

According to the service's website, Starlink makes it possible to conduct video calls, online games, streaming and other activities at high data transfer rates. According to the provider, users can expect download speeds of 100 to 200 megabytes per second.

To connect to satellite internet, you need to have additional equipment.

Following the call of Ukrainian Deputy Prime Minister Mykhailo Fyodorov on Twitter, Ilon Musk provided support for the service, with the US billionaire promising to deliver special terminals as well.

The first batch of Starlink internet access equipment has been delivered to Ukraine. It is possible to place a pre-order on the official website of the project, but it is reported that the connection will be provided in 2023.
