School na Scam

Education is what remains after one has forgotten what one has learned in school. — Albert Einstein

Today, I heard someone say a very common statement by a lot of my compatriots when asked why he had decided to not go back to school. "School na scam" he said, translate to school is scam. The truth is that a lot of people say this in my parts of the world, even students in the university say it too, and I'd always tell them to drop out then whenever I hear them say that. I mean, why continue wasting your time doing something you consider to be a fraudulent scheme?

Whether they truly believe this or not, I don't can't say. Of course one way to look at the statement is that it is an indictment of our educational system, also, this is said because of successful people who had either dropped out of school or not gone to school at all and still become successful against all odds.

I remember as a young boy, when I was ion primary school, I used to drag my sister to school as she would always cry and refuse to go to school. This happened every school day. As a school lover, I had to find a way to woo my sister into loving school to and making the morning journey easier for the both of us. So, I sacrificed part my lunch money to buy her snacks or sweets at a shop halfway between my house and school. That way, before she is done munching on it, we would have gotten to school and I am free since she usually stop crying immediately we reach school. Well, even that didn't always go as planned.

Gone are the days when school is a guarantee for success or a good job with a good pay. All that luxuries are now for those who know the right people, and it doesn't even matter whether or not they are qualified for the job. A lot of people go to school not because they want to, but because their parents wanted them to. You see that because their mind is not in it, they usually struggle with their academics.

One of the many things I must commend my parents for was the liberty they gave us to choose our path. After your secondary school, it was entirely up to you to decide what it is you want to do next, either you want to learn a skill or choose to further your education. If you choose to further your education, your course of study is entirely up to you too. So, you may understand how strange it was for me when I learnt a lot of other people were being forced to go to school and to study a particular course too because it is believed to be more lucrative and your chances of being unemployed are very slim. When the parents' choices are forced on their children, it is usually difficult for said children to cope with their academics and often lose interest altogether because they are not really happy doing what they are doing. That is not to say that there are also not those who learn to love what they are doing eventually.

I'd be lying if I said school is necessary for everyone, truth is that it actually isn't and not everyone need go to school, neither will everyone who go to school will be successful nor brilliant and make good grades. In fact, I remember posting on my WhatsApp status a while back about this topic. I had said that school will teach you 1+1=2, and how you use that knowledge to your advantage in life is entirely up to you. Basically, school shows you are path and it is entirely up to you walk that path to the desired destination.

Knowledge and application of knowledge are two different things. It takes an intelligent and creative mind to apply knowledge. A lot of things I know I had learnt outside the walls of a school, school will not teach you about life, that, you also learn on your own.

In conclusion, I am by no means undermining the importance of school, neither am I overemphasising it. There is and should be a difference between one who is learned and one who isn't. A farmer who had studied Agriculture in school shouldn't be the same as a farmer who never went to school. Application of theories and calculation of expected yield among other things should make a difference.

Thank You For Reading 🖤🖤

I have the boy at school in the fourth grade, I don't know to what extent he is studying there or how he is prepared, but when he comes home, he only comes with good grades. I think that today you either study at school or you don't go at all. To do a school just to have a diploma but not to have prepared, it is not possible. It affects the future of any child!

I won't blame them for saying school na scam. Looking at the way things are going in this country, it's understandable why people will make that statement. You will go to school and graduate but you will end up doing what you didn't learn in school simply because we are all living in a crazy country 😆

Oh in your country also facing same problem. Now every government just say in media that all are minimum educated. But this education system has no value. Students fall in depression when they move to professional life and don't get job years to years.

The situation of the things in our country is making the majority of our youth to say that kind of statement, because there's no hope of getting a good a job after schooling.... Well nowadays the majority of us including me is going to school fir me to have more knowledge not because of any government work... As it is, even though I was offered a government work for free , I will not go for it because government work here is just like you're in slavery... Except for the minister

Schools plays great role In our life by imparting knowledge among the students and it's all depends on the students how they apply that knowledge. You remind me back school day when I also goes to school with my youngest sister

Your parents are loveable, parents like yours is quite rare to find, my mum still insist I be a lawyer. It's so pathetic. It's always best for one to study what one wants. But these days, most people go to school just to earn a certificate atleast to show that they self went to school.

😅 I'd say you be whatever you want to be, just don't tell your mom I said so. You are right, some just want the certificate the show that they went to school.

As much as I would have wanted to believe that school nah scam because of the current educational standard in the country, I still think that we can't overemphasize the place of school, you never know what's in store for you in the future and how you would be needing your educational qualification

Sometimes I wonder if we can choose our own subjects. Like, choosing our own subjects will help us focus on what we want and neglect the useless subjects.

Hehe. I think all courses have been assigned a subject for a particular purpose. I have thought about this too.

Primary and high school education ( till 10th standard ) is important through that your reading, thinking and writing skills go to a great height. That much Education is enough for to execute your ideas or pursue something different.

I like the way you took care of your little sis ooh😁. School is not scam!! That's one thing we all should know. Nigeria is the real scam. It's our pleasure going to school but it's so devastating to finish the school, have all the necessary certificates to get a job and you won't still get that job. It's not nice and it's not helping matters

Perhaps, it is safer to say that the government is the scam. Strange because they enjoyed many benefits when they went to school.

I can tell you that not everyone was born to study. Many can't tolerate sitting for days on end and not learning anything today. I wanted to do a short career as a professional and I fell in love with what I was doing so much that I went on to college. I have a younger brother who only made it to the third year of high school because he told me he couldn't cope with his brain anymore. He wanted to learn and he couldn't do it anymore. Today he is a good businessman. What can I tell you? you instill in your children to get a career and if they don't want to continue, they shouldn't do it and look for their own destiny.

I very much agree with you. Not everyone is designed to study and not everyone will cope. That doesn't mean those who didn't study will not become successful.

The basic primary and secondary school I would say they are necessary but after that, trust me, it's a huge scam. They should have given me the money I wasted in a Private Institute instead. Most parents want to force us to go through educational line without asking what we truly wanted. I told my dad mine but he made me go through University degree. I don't even know what I am doing with it now.

Education is also important. Successful people have gained also knowledge and skills. What they have transfered to real life is taken from the school.
