HoriMiya: Innocently Sweet
So I decided to watch Anime nowadays instead of watching some American or Korean drama. I think I have exhausted my eyes and my brain with those kinds of stories and I was looking for something laid-back and a bit more relaxing.
And also, I am in constant search of inspiration for my The Not So Perfect World series. I am just so stuck right now.
There I was, sitting comfortably on my chair with my feet on top of my bed scrolling through Netflix offerings using the remote, and I stumbled upon HoriMiya. I can’t remember if I have already watched it. My Netflix account was reset so I currently have no records of what I have already watched. And I was too lazy to fire up my laptop and go to GogoAnime to check if I have already seen it, hence the Netflix.
Anyway, I went on and played it.
Expectation
I have my Netflix account configured to not play any trailers and teasers, you know, to save data. Yup, it sucks to have a limited internet connection at home. And that’s the beauty of it, I can’t see any trailer so I don’t have any idea what to expect and there can be no unnecessary spoilers.
So, going in, I don’t have high expectations for the show because I haven’t heard anyone talking about it or just referenced it in a conversation. But that’s a good thing too. I tend to love the shows that aren’t mainstream in the sense that almost everyone is talking about them. Don’t get me wrong, I watch popular Animes too, but I just fall in love with some laid-back shows harder.
But I guess, if I would have to say something, I think that I expected this show to be along the lines of Tonari No Kaibutsu-kun. And maybe some vibe from Kimi ni Todoke, but lighter.
Character Design
The animation is simple and good in the eyes. I think that the character’s visuals perfectly fit their personalities. I also really love the gaps in their personas. They aren’t forced and they just felt natural.
Hori for example, the popular girl in school, she was not hiding the fact that she’s more of a homemaker than a cool kid but the difference between school-Hori and home-Hori is discernable.
There are just some things that I would have wanted to see better especially when it comes to the supporting characters. I think they could have had a bigger impact on the story and they could have developed a little more.
Story
I totally love the story. It’s pretty laid-back, perfectly what I wanted to watch. Nothing really overly dramatic and nothing that heavy. I think that the only element that’s closely related to the dark side of things is Miyamura’s past which made him appear so gloomy. And that’s the reason why no one really associates with him, except Hori who doesn’t care much about anything at all. Really.
The development of the story was smooth, again, nothing is forced. The pacing is also fast but not rushed. I mean, they were talking about marriage in the later episodes but you kinda know that it is going there anyway.
I just thought that the series could have used some more big events to spice the story up a little bit. I mean, it was not boring, not at all, but nothing really stood out as a very memorable scene. I wasn’t even sure where the climax was. All I know was is it was going to end. I think they are setting up for a second season, but I guess, it didn’t quite pan out.
Conclusion
To sum it all up, I can actually say that I liked the show, a lot. It fits perfectly the mood that I was looking for at that time. Not too heavy, not too comic, and with just the right amount of chumminess.
I am really a sucker for that kind of show. I want to just sit back relax and be carried away in a relaxing world of Anime. This is a great show to binge-watch on a rainy day over a cup of hot chocolate and you are wrapped around the blanket.
I would recommend it to you if you ever want to watch something that would refresh your mind amidst the hustle and bustle of city life.
