I know that some of you already know that I'm a hard drinker. I mean, I am quite a party person — but only with my friends. Even though we are hanging out with drinks, we manage to talk about politics, life, and all. My friends are smart and it is the reason why we love having conversations with a shotglass rotating on us.
In this article, let me share with you some questions asked by one of my friends. The flow of our conversation starts when one of us starts asking a random question but needs to answered logically and critically.
After answering the questions that time, I decided to compile them and publish an article about it. So, here we go!
What do you think is the problem and greatest challenge that the Philippine economy is facing right now?
As we know, the pandemic affected the economy of every country worldwide, and the Philippines are on the list. Community Quarantines, also known as lockdowns, were announced by the government, restricted most small businesses, and crippled the retail sectors around the locals.
Only a few establishments are allowed to operate, and less return on investment to the company means no profit gained for the economy. Also, jobs are still at risk, and more people have become unemployed. Some tourists are not yet allowed to visit the country, which affects the country's tourism.
Sadly, corruption still existed even with the virus outbreak. The country is already on so many debts because of the pandemic. On the other hand, the health system is not strong enough to accommodate and solve the problem. Delayed vaccinations are causing more trouble today. Also, not everyone wants to be vaccinated since some people are still questioning their credibility.
Describe the Philippine Politics in terms of leadership
Most citizens are aware of the leadership that the government officials are showing us. Maybe some are too focused on their survival, but some are doing something for the country. Some politicians take advantage of their power.
Corruption still exists, and only a few politicians know how to consider their countrymen. Some leaders are not good followers too. Not everyone seems to be qualified and deserving of the position because of some lack of knowledge and credibility to lead.
The improvements of the country and its people have been covered using the personal agendas of politicians. Officials sometimes do not listen to their people. The propagandas are not understood well. And lastly, the lack of objectives from the leaders is crippling the country.
What are your thoughts about the election?
The Philippines is a democratic country, and it means that people are the country's power. The government makes the election process fair and square. On the contrary, not every citizen knows the dark sides of the politicians they are voting for. Some officials can run for the higher position even if they are not qualified. Sadly, they can still have the spot even if they have a lot of cases or are detained.
One of the realities behind the election is that it seems to be only for the common surnames or the Political Dynasty. Politicians from different parties who will run are throwing accusations at each other when the election is coming.
The worst part is there are too many killings and crimes when the election gets nearer. On the other hand, the counting of votes is shown on national TV for the citizens. But even so, there are allegations and speculations of cheating during elections.
Think of one positive culture of Filipinos
The attitude of hospitality and respect among the people.
One of the positive cultures that the Filipinos have is having the attitude of being hospitable and respectful. It is the two exceptional traits of being a citizen of the Philippines because we can take it anywhere we go. Also, people mostly remember the good attitude you showed them.
Admit it or not, we feel happy when the visitors or tourists talk in general when describing the hospitality and respect from Filipinos. They keep coming back not because of the place but because of the people around. The warm welcome and paying of consideration to everyone makes their hearts flutter. It only means that being respectful will give you a good reputation.
And for the Filipinos, this culture unites the people. It makes them have a good relationship with one another. Also, people will be comfortable with each other.
Think of a negative culture of Filipinos
The Maniana Habit (Mamaya Na)
Every culture has a positive side, but sometimes we have this attitude that is a negative one. We talk about the Maniana Habit of Filipinos, also known as "Mamaya Na," in Tagalog.
In this culture, people are into procrastination. Things that need to be done early will meet their due. And when it did, the finished product or work done is not good enough when this habit occurred along the process. Additionally, the practice causes you stress when finishing a rushed piece of work.
This Filipino culture is what starts misunderstanding among other people, especially in workplaces. People will not be productive if they make this a habit. They cannot work both efficiently and effectively and will only give a burden to them. It comes with a price like being fired in a job or rushed works are not too polished.
