Things To Consider Before Buying/Adopting A Pet
1. Reason
Ask yourself why do you want to buy/adopt a pet? Is it because you just want to show off? To impress someone or do you really want a life companion?
There are a lot of factors why you should know the reason why you want to buy/adopt a pet in the next things that I should be discussing. Piece of advice: If you just want a pet for you to show off then, don't consider having one. A pet deserves more than just being treated as a display or figurines.
2. Sense of responsibility and Commitment
Are you ready to take them for a walk? Stay at home and miss a trip with your friends just to look after your pet?
Know that when you acquire a pet, you are commiting in another living creature. It is your responsibility to take care of them. For example feed, give them a bath, clean their poops, and other essential things that your pet requires.
3. Budget
This is one of the most important things that you should consider before having a pet. Know that a pet not just requires food but it also requires a budget for its maintenance such as grooming, pet supplies, cage, and most especially vet bills.
It is important that you are able to provide your pet's needs. And also, your budget should also depend on what pet you are going for. For example, for exotic pets. It requires a special habitat for it to live in. If you have the budget, then go for it.
4. Space
Does your place have an extra place for a pet? Does your house have a front or backyard? Spacious living room? Space is a factor in getting a pet. For instance, if you have lots of space in your house, then opt for a large breed. If not, settle for a medium or small breed.
Do not let your pet's health be compromised because of your space. Give them what they deserve.
5. Do Your Own Research (DYOR)
Breed | Adoption | Details
Know what specific breed that you like. There are pets that have thick coats especially the ones that are from countries that are relatively cold. Their coats are there for a reason. If you're getting a dog that has a thick coat be informed that it will require more needs than the other breeds since it needs a cold place to be in. Also, if you really want this kind of dog, be ready for upcoming vet bills if they might have issues adjusting in our country's climate.
As for the adoption, do a research about the dog facility that you're going to get your pets. There are dogs for adoption that are retired from their military services. These types of dogs need rehabilitation and will not get along with your kids.
You should also be able to know your pet's details. As I've mentioned, some pets cannot easily adjust to our country's climate. If you still insist on getting one that has a low acclimate rate, then be ready to provide a habitat where it can adjust well. For example, using air conditioner/ electric fans to help your pet husky in hot weather. Since this type of dog is originally bred for cold weather, it is best to provide their needs or somehow close to it.
6. Grooming
It is best to train your pets while they are still young so that it will be easy when you are grooming them. You should be able to clean their ears, clip their nails, and brush their teeth. If you can't do it on your own, then it will require a budget to hire a groomer. So, it is best to train them young so that it can help you lessen their expenses.
7. Be patient
Patience is one thing that not all pet owners have. If you are planning to acquire a pet, you should first have patience. Training your pets isn't an easy thing to do --- It will require a lot of time and patience. You should be able to potty train them, to teach them not to chew on your shoes, and etc.
If you're not patient enough, then consider not having one.
Final thoughts...
Having a pet isn't all about the glamorous side and flaunting and taking pictures of them and posting it on social media. You should be able to own up to your responsibilities as pet owners. Do not let a pet suffer from your negligence. Think of it if you really want one. Give them what they truly deserve.
Do not also forget to consult a Vet for your pet's health needs. Let's all promote responsible pet ownership.
