A Day As A Veterinary Medicine Student

Since the Inter-Agency Task Force has not yet granted limited face-to-face classes to our course Doctor of Veterinary Medicine, we are stuck by doing our laboratory activities at home. I'm sharing this happening today as a blog to give you guys an idea of what we do as medical students.

As you may have an idea of what medical students do---read and memorize the information that is on the books, there is so much more to that. We medical students apply our knowledge by doing practical exams and sometimes moving exams.

Today, I had a laboratory exercise wherein I identified the Internal and External features and functions of the chicken. I woke up before 8 am to prepare the chicken and removed the feathers. Thankfully my grandmother was present earlier and I ask her to kill the chicken while I was holding it. I couldn't,t to it myself because I was showing sympathy to it.

We were the second group to perform the laboratory exercise and there were unexpected things that happen. My professor was naturally nice and she makes us feel comfortable by asking us questions not related to the activity before she starts to asks the harder questions.

It was my turn when she was asking me where I got my chicken and I told her that it was from our backyard farm. She even asked me if the people in our home knew about what I am going to do with the chicken and I said yes. Then suddenly my brother came and saw me showing off the chicken in front of the camera and said, "Pot* ka pinapainggit mo na naman yang manok" "You're bragging the chicken again to them." It was the end of my career. Hahahaha. I panicked and we were just laughing about it. I just told my professor that we should just consider it as a commercial.

Kidding aside she first started to ask me about the external features, it was so hard. She asked me to point out a part of the chicken and give off its function and specify what bone is it. My dumb-ass mind pointed out the wrong part of the chicken. I was instructed to point out the leg but, the part that I pointed out was the shank. It wasn't entirely my fault, it was the image that I studied the day after the activity. The labeling was wrong. Though I also have an error by not double-checking the sources. I just printed it out because I find the chicken beautiful and I ignored the one that was black and white but has the correct information. I learned my lesson that it's not always about the aesthetically pleasing resources but it's about the reliable resources.

The last part that she instructed me to point out was the internal organs. It was difficult especially on the part of the intestines because they all look the same. Also, there were a lot of fats surrounding the organs making it way harder for the organs to locate. I had mistakes and other answers that I didn't know about. Thank God our professor was so considerate enough to give me a different question. She discussed our wrong answers and give the right ones before ending the google meet.

Nokma, the Katniss Everdeen for me today is now resting in peace and taste so good. My Dad cooked her for our viand. Lol.

Final thoughts...

It would be nice taking Poultry subject in the old normal set-up. I could imagine myself going to poultry farms studying the chicken in their enclosures and weighing their eggs. I am so tired of shoving my specimen in front of the camera.

How I wish that the IATF would consider treating my course as "Essential" like how they treat other medical courses. This online class set-up is not going to work for a med student like me.

Wow such a great practical. I'm not a medical practitioner but remember vividly that when I was in secondary school. We dissected a dog in Biology. It's an educative thing.

Oh no this article gave me war flashbacks when we dissected a frog in high school HAHAHA. It is good that your prof is considerate and also you learned a lesson as well so that's great. I hope that soon you will also be allowed some f2f classes. For engineering courses, f2f classes are already being discussed but I do not think it will happen for this sem.

We also dissected frog in senior highschool. My frog was so calm but my friends frogs were unruly, it was jumping all around the classroom. 😂 It was so noisy that time because of the screams hahahaha. Yeah, I think f2f classes in this time will not resume because of the rising cases. The earliest f2f would be next school year.

Man I cannot even imagine having to do such things at home! Where would I even get a live chicken? Or the stuff to cut it open properly? Kudos to you for doing that!

You can get it at a local market or in farms. Actually, I have no idea of cutting it the proper way. I just asked my groupmate where to start the incision. Hahahaha
